Echolocation - How dolphins produce and detect sound

When the sound is emitted from the phonic lips, it is reflected by the surrounding air sacs first and refracted by the connective tissue, then goes to the melon. Without the air sacs, the sound would not transmit forward, it would go everywhere. Also, dolphins use only the right side of phonic lips to generate the echolocation clicks instead of using both.
