@@IllObserveAndReport I have two separate rescue Eclectus Parrots and although I have amazing bonds with them, after taking everything so slow. I would never free fly them. But my hubby and I turned our outdoor dinning and paved area plus most of our yard into a monster sized aviary. They are both happy with loads of human interaction flying great meals and the precious love they now share with our family being house and outside flown, social interactions with wild birds even if its on the tv. They are healthy happy boys, I'm so glad they came to be our friends after their start to life was not very good at all, poor bird. But now happy talkative love children kinda birds. A guy in vegas did this in front of a crowd of people in a show. The birds he had were beautiful, one snow white and mixed with powder blue. The birds take off from his arms on both sides at the same time. They flew forward across this auditorium spaced apart, in perfect formation. And with that same orchestrated linearity, the birds turn near the and of the place, and cross over each other in the middle, just like your airshow pilots in planes. Now the birds are flying back to the stage over these people in the audience towards the guy with both arms extended. Again, the birds are in perfect formation. Then, the birds land on the opposite arms of this guy that they took off from. Both at the same time. Never seen anything like it before. Never seen anything like it since.

What a spot! I fly my little green cheek conure but don't have any geography close to this nearby. However, I did train him to know his neighborhood and another across town. I live in San Francisco, CA and have only met two people who take their Macaws to the park. Biggest problem is red-tailed hawks. Fortunately, my bird is fast and small. I'd worry about a larger heavier bird. Flying/excercise is what birds need the most after nutrition and emotional concerns. It's not for every bird owner and is something I worked at gradually over 6-8 months. In the wild they'd be winging it for 6-8 hours and covering an area of 30-60 square miles foraging, etc. Wish I could live up in the trees with them too!

What do you do about Eagles and other Raptors? I live in quite a remote area, but we have a large number of Raptors in our skies. It is in fact a great place for bird watching. This has made me very cautious about even considering free flight for one of my birds. I'd love to know more about how you deal with and or explain how you work around the threat of Attack from Wild Birds. I don't see how you could condition your Pet Bird mentally for that kind of thing. (I assume that has to be done to ensure bird returns to you when under threat.
@AdventuresofRoku7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, We live in Australia so we have far more varied species of raptors then anywhere else, in fact there's a 95% chance during our outings that we will encounter a bare minimum of one raptor. Many of the videos I have uploaded show raptors flying overhead or my birds chasing them off. What is not dangerous for properly trained free flight parrots can be a extremely high risk situation leading to loss if a pet indoor parrot was placed in the same situation. - There is no operant conditioning training that will prepare your bird for safe free flight and proper responses in the event of danger. This is why I continually point out that free flight training is not based on recall training nor relationship. For eg. my major Mitchells cockatoo is free flighted and to this day I have not gone out of my way at any point to practice recall. Though recall is a useful tool it's not a necessity nor foundational. Brain development is the foundational factor. A properly trained free flight parrot must have the same brain development as their wild counterparts, so just like the millions of wild parrots that survive and thrive alongside raptors daily so to can properly trained free flight parrots. This is because they possess or develop the same key behaviours/flight skills that allow them to deal with danger appropriately. - In the even of a raptor attacking the absolute worst thing you can do is have a bird with blind recall, this is the reason why so many birds are lost to raptors or lost in general, they do not have the right brain development to be outdoors in the first place. It's also why many rehabilitation programs that release endangered birds find the majority die, this is why they are looking to the science based information on developmental stages and applying the right approach. www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php explains all this in far greater detail. - For some videos of my birds dealing or flying alongside raptors ive included some of the links below. 1. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2LOZ5WpnLxnbsU 2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6mnfGl-nph4ZtE 3. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaS4lYKbjb-HrLM There are many many more but these are just a few.

What about predators? I don't know what kind of predators there are in Australia, but here in the southwestern US I'd be afraid to let my bird fly outside with red tailed hawks flying around.
@AdventuresofRoku7 жыл бұрын
beaglemanzzz we live in Australia, there's far more predators here then in the states. So our birds need to deal with it the same way the wild parrots deal with them on the daily ☺️ www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php has a detailed answer explaining it :)
@beaglemanzzz7 жыл бұрын
So as I figured there's always a risk... I know the red tailed hawks in my area are habituated to parrots as I've personally seen one attack a flock of feral red lored amazons in a tree. It makes me think twice about letting my bird outside especially with no flockmates to help cover him.
@AdventuresofRoku7 жыл бұрын
theres risk with everything it's just about knowing what level of risk there is, it's not as black and white about letting your birds outdoors and hoping for the best. It's got everything to do with their brain and its development and ability to process and respond accordingly. Pet parrots are significantly different to properly trained free flight parrots, and the risk of an attack of predators is significantly different between the two. As explained on the website in link above, raptors can intentionally flush/chase a flock to scan and identify any potential weak or vulnerable birds. These flight patterns are what is targeted to ensure a high chance of successful kill. Pet indoor parrots have behaviours and flight patters that reflect vulnerability and weakness. Leaving them high risk.

@AdventuresofRoku7 жыл бұрын
most definitely never ever use a run/leash as this is extremely detrimental to free flight and can be the sole reason you lose your bird. not all birds can or should be free flown, many can meet their physical and mental needs within the safety of indoors or with harness training. For those that do need free flight or benefits outweigh the risks, its an extremely time consuming lifestyle change and one you cannot stop no matter what your excuse. www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php explains this further. www.libertywings.com has the only accredited science based free flight course specific to parrots. Without this knowledge base you run the risk of losing your bird, so if your bird is like family then it deserves to have its companion be fully equipped and ready, not cut corners.

@AdventuresofRoku6 жыл бұрын
mmm no its completely normal? it would be more dependent on what they are trying to achieve ie landing on a tree, higher landing point etc. I would say flapping their wings is what keeps them in the air.... perhaps take a read through the science based articles here :) www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php
