The 4g64 service manual has a procedure to resolve the clack without parts: With the engine warm and full of oil, rev from idle slowly to 3000 rpm (over the course of 15 seconds. That means slowly pressing down little by little on the gas until you reach 3000RPM at the 15 second mark ) and suddenly let off the gas and let it idle for 15 more seconds. It says do this from 10 to 30 times. Once the noise stops, they say dot it 5 more times.

stonent its been couple of years. is your car still doing it? or car is gone?

This recommendation seems to rely on the lifters loosening up and regaining their compression spring-i-ness through the intensified impact with high revs. If you've already damaged the end of the stems, I don't know if this will work. If you've bent a stem, there's no way that this will solve the problem. Some people have solved the problem using Seafoam which I'm guessing is acting as a distillate to break down carbon build up which is likely why lifters eventually lock up.

The paragraph in the service manual is about removing air inside the lash adjusters. This will remove ticking that is caused by old oil (Old oil doesn't let go of mixed-in air very well) but doesn't solve the ticking that is caused by carbon build up and debris blocking the oil-passage (The hole) in the lash adjusters. The only way to fix ticking which is caused by carbon build up and debris is removing the lash adjusters and replacing them with new ones, or by giving the old lash adjusters a diesel bath over night. The 3rd generation lash adjusters even have a bigger "oil hole" to reduce the chance of clogging up again. Others have taken their old 1st gen. lash adjusters and widened their holes by drilling.

Thanks for making this video. Lucas used to do the trick but now with even a whole quart of Lucas and fresh oil and filter it still sounds like there's a woodpecker stuck in there. I got ready to pull the valve cover and noticed the forum instructions I was looking at was for the 4G69. Found your video and now down the right path. Thanks again!

In case anyone else missed it, I think the torque on the shaft bolts are 23 foot pounds.

Thanks for this video. I have an 02 Galant that sounds exactly like that, I thought maybe a spun bearing but now I think I've got it solved. The head is 180 degrees rotated from your 4g64 but I suspect it will be pretty close under the cover.

One quick comment, if the valve cover doesn't want to come off (likely), use a chisel and mallet. Insert the chisel in between the head and the cover and tap. Do this in a few spots along the front with gentle taps and eventually you'll create a gap. Now insert a screw driver and you can pry open the cover without destroying the gasket. However, because gaskets aren't that expensive, (

whats torque spec when tightening the rockers and such back on... just snug or what?

Wish I had watched this video 25,000 miles ago! Replacing the valve lifters is really quite easy and they only cost about $60 on Amazon. Add new plugs and wires, new valves, new valve cover gasket, and you are looking at only about $200 and 2 or 3 hours of your time. This would probably cost $1000 or more at a dealership.

Wou li e you think this is a similar job for the noisy ticking of the 6g74 3.5l sohc v6 Pajero engine?

My Haynes manual says if you want to replace the lifter you need to replace the rocker arm. Has anyone actually gone through with this and improved the tapping?

@E5A6Z1Y did it solve the ticking/slapping sound?
@dsmchick9356 жыл бұрын
Really? Seriously going to try this. I thought it was my lifters making that ticking sound but I'm not for sure maybe it is the valves

@wes39393 I have multiple times taken the valve cover off and gasket and both cleaned up and it never fails that it leaks around the bottom right corner. I don't see cracks on valve cover. any suggestions?

You’re over tightening it. Conform with torque specs. My valve covers for the 6g74 are torqued to 3.9nm

They dont go on so easy by the way you should show the grease used and how to put lash back in they fall out
@jesusalvarado16576 жыл бұрын
For the lifters to go in easy I believe you have to leave them soaking avernight.
