Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire you to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow.
Marathwada in Maharashtra state is one of the driest regions in India, with a high number of farmer suicides. Dry spells are a direct cause of economic distress. But in one community the switch to a drought-resistant crop has made all the difference.

The price of the insect's lives seem like a necessary downside when you look at all the benefits of this. Farmers end up being the most oppressed and marginalized, even when their work is the most important. As the climate changes, they cannot grow the same things they used to be able to. I agree with Kalidas, that the most important thing is that everyone is able to live, work, and make enough to be able to sustain themselves, so they do not suicide because of not being able to make it.

Don't you know how many sucking insects and cotton bollworms are killed in producing cotton 😅

Silkworms are a very good low on the food chain insect, over 98% die before they make cocoons because of predation or disease. More of them survive when in sericulture than in the wild.
