00:00 Today we will compare the two..
popular insulation materials for a frame house are minvata and eco-wool. I used both of these heaters. Which one is better? There is no definite answer. Each has its own pros and cons, and in each case one of the heaters will work better. Let's figure it out together.
00:18 What is the material?
Mineral wool is made mainly from the melt of igneous rocks. One of their insulation components is a binder that binds the fibers together, thereby providing the products with the specified shape and density parameters.
Eco-wool (or Cellulose insulation) - consists of about 80% of newsprint/waste paper and 20% of non-volatile antifungal and flame extinguishing substances.
Let's go directly to the comparison.
01:08 1.Cost
The cost of mineral wool for Krasnoyarsk at the end of 2021, on average, is 4,000 rubles / m3.
For the ekovata, it is slightly lower on average - 3,000 rubles/m3. It also depends on the quality, manufacturer, location and method of insulation.
01:36 2.Complexity of installation
Minvata is in a clear plus here. Any person can cope with insulation, without any equipment.
What can not be said about the ekovata. First, it is necessary to completely create a cavity (except for wet application), make holes and blow out the eco-cotton with the help of special expensive equipment. The qualification of installers is extremely important, because it is necessary to clearly control the blowing process so that the cavities are evenly filled with insulation with the required density. Things are easier with horizontal insulation. Here you just need to fluff the eco-wool and pour it into the cavity.
02:33 3.Thermal conductivity
The thermal conductivity of both materials in the dry state is approximately the same and is 0.03-0.05 W/m*K.
02:54 4.Fear of moisture
Minvata loses in this respect. Humidification by 1%, increases thermal conductivity up to 10%.
Due to its organic structure, the eco-wool can absorb up to 20% of moisture without losing its properties at all. At the same time, it has good hygroscopicity.
03:52 5.Rodents and insects
Eco-cotton is a loose and friable material for rodents, it is inedible and not convenient for living in it. Orthoboric acid in the composition of the material causes thirst and discomfort in mice and rats, which leads to disruption of reproduction processes. And indeed, in our frame house, insulated with eco-wool, not a single rodent has been encountered in 4 years.
In Minvat, unfortunately, the opposite is true. For mice, this is the most comfortable insulation. Accordingly, when using this insulation, it is necessary to provide protection.
05:15 6.Durability
The Ministry of Natural Resources claims a service life of up to 50 years, but I know from experience, at least in Siberia, that due to unfavorable operating conditions, after 20 years of low-quality insulation, there may be dust left.
At the ekovata, they also claim a service life of 50 years.
05:50 7.Fire resistance
Minvata is a clear leader here, because it has a degree of combustibility NG. I.e. it does not burn at all.
Things are worse for the ekovata, but not fatally. It has a degree of flammability G2 (it happens to be eco-friendly with a degree of flammability G1).
06:23 8.Sound absorption
Here +- mineral wool and eco-wool are equally pleasant.
With a insulation thickness of 150-200mm, you will practically not hear the air noise from the street.
07:27 9.Environmental friendliness
A very contradictory criterion. There is an extremely ambiguous opinion on this on the Internet. There are quite convincing adherents, both for and against.
09:54 General conclusion
If we are talking about horizontal surfaces, then the undisputed favorite here is the eco-wool. Because of its properties, I like it more - it's durability, not fear of moisture and the absence of rodents. But if you want to insulate the walls with this insulation, then I would recommend hiring professionals and let them be applied in a wet way. Yes, it will cost more, but it will save you from the problems I have encountered.. we'll talk about this a little later ;)
If you do not want eco-wool on the exterior walls, then there is a place for stone wool, but there must necessarily be a good and airtight vapor barrier inside, and a membrane outside (in case some part of the moisture penetrates.. and she could go outside unhindered). This will increase the durability and thermal protection of the insulation. Next, of course, good ventilation.. it will not hurt any house at all, but in the case of absolutely sealed walls, this is especially important. And think about protection from rodents. In this case, stone wool will serve you well for many years.
Internal partitions are definitely easier to make from stone wool.. there is no acute issue of durability, moisture and rodents.. non-combustible properties
