Great video. Hope you guys restore the habitat for peat bogs. Whether a bog is 5 meters deep or 10 centimeters probably doesn't really matter for the biodiversity, as deep down in a bog there's no life at all - right?

Do "cut away" bogs and scrubland have any protection in ireland or can farmers just continue to drain, "reclaim" and convert to grassland as theyre doing all over the country ?

Hi, its a good question but unfortunately no clear answer. It largely depends on who owns the bog. Theres no automatic protection and much of our bogs are 'commonage' or owned by extraction companies. There's almost zero financial incentive to do anything with cut away bogs except to abandon them and despite the PR nonsense, this is what happens to most when theyve finished extracting anything of value. If they were even forced to dam up drains and at least leave them alone, they might have some chance. Unfortunately this only happens in the odd case and the PR people get to work extolling their 'rehabilitation' and 'conservation' efforts. The bogs that are protected had to get that status and are often SACs in their own right. and unfortunately they are generally tiny and few and far between. Apologies for the lack of clarity in this response but its Irelands dirty and not so little secret.
