Thank you so much sir, i have been watching all your videos for Economic Survey. Inequality vs Growth Chapter had a lot of conflicting theories. The Chapter i believe is trying really hard to go for growth while ignoring the inequality. I do prefer going for a growth model while caring for inequality at the same time rather than at the end. 1. For advanced economies: inequality impacts more to socio economic indicators & hence ES argues that they can focus on reducing inequality. But the things is how? once the share of growth has been divided among people how can we reduce it later? take back from them? Any ideas? 2. In India, Inequality of consumption is >>> than inequality of assets & that is because we are emerging economies with lower growth rate, lower standard of living. So, people can consume with less money in the income. However, if we only focus on growing like (CAPITALIST MODEL), Growth will happen & more will go to rich --> rich people acquiring more assets & eventually inequality of assets will increase once we have a larger GDP. So inequality of consumption gets converted to inequality of assets if we follow only the path of growth. 3. Another flaw i feel could be is this: As we keep growing we are not changing the level of POVERTY LINE. Poverty line in 2010 cannot be same as 2020. SO, there needs to be a fair comparison. However, Perfect equality is not optimal. If Economy grows, that gives more revenue to the government to deal with poverty.

If growth increases, it may lead to positive oucome on socio-economic indicators . But how increased inequality in India leads to postive health, education outcomes?
@VajiramandRaviOfficial
@VajiramandRaviOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Student, One of the reasons for the same is the fact that over empowering impact of inequality would kick in only after the economy attains a certain basic level of economic growth & development like say US, Europe etc. Currently, howsoever hard we may celebrate, but we are still a “LOWER MIDDLE-INCOME” Economy. And for such economies, growth would be slightly more overpowering than inequality in terms of its impact on major (not all) socio-economic indicators. Hope it helps.

This explains why growth will be over empowering than inequality. But how inequality leads to increase in positive outcome in the 1st place ie how can inequality be empowering??????

Sir, I was wondering: Poverty levels are calculated based on affordability of basic amenities. If incomes keep rising, wouldn't we at some point in time come to a stage where the lower classes would be again be pushed to a new level of poverty due to inflation?
@subhashjha1789
@subhashjha1789 3 жыл бұрын
I think in boom period also ;growth rate is always higher than inflation..so poor can afford basic amenities if distribution is fair in economy :but yes there will be inequality and they will be relatively poor and not absolute poor...but if inflation is more than growth rate then for sure more people will become poorer..

Poverty line keeps changing based on prices of basic goods. We can say it's based on real income(inflation adjusted).

The arguments in the survey have been framed as if they are made by a school going child.. Anyway growth and inequality should work together else we will not be able to achieve the full potential of the country. The survey subtly didnt mentioned the point that reduction in inequality can only fuel the growth to achieve its potential.
