When you take the partial derivative with respect to L, the exponent on L, the 1/2, is brought down in front and multiplied by the 2 to get 1.

hi Kevin, on the second last page at 7:36 he has came up with a result of ' z = 2*v '. and then on, last page he has just differentiated this equation i.e. z = 2*v ; with respect to v, which is nothing but d(2v)/dv=2 d(v)/v = 2. hope this solves your query..!
