We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. Winston Churchill

The power of Freemasonry in the City of London corporation is absolute, all the companies and Banks are infested with the highest degrees and the Guilds centred there in the square mile. People outside of the City in the regions who are members have not got the foggiest idea of the powers above them. It is a completely different world.

Not sure I would have made the top 40, I don't claim to be a genius in any sense. However, I love the opportunity to do that here in Northern Ireland for a five-year period, couldn't be less active or productive than the current 5 year cycles !!

Experiments in parallel happen in the devolved nations of the UK. Have you not noticed? But if the jocks do anything different they are perceived as the awkward squad by England and economically undermined of course. Why would devolved English regions be any better in this situation that Wales (terrible health care and education)? You can't advocate for devolution of power within the UK without talking about the devolution that is already there and why that has or has not worked. I suppose it illustrates the point he is trying to make of the parochial nature of the South of England. Oxbridge academics willing to wax lyrical on China and Singapore when they can't even get the name of the 3rd largest political party in their own country (the UK) right and know little about the experiment in devolution that has been running for the past 25 years in their own country (the UK). Perhaps because they only ever think of a greater England? The region of the UK that is a good illustration of how to turn around an economy might be Ireland for yes they were part of the the United Kingdom until 1922 when the left! And of course Singapore became remarkably successful after they left the British Empire (and not as a devolved region of Malaysia but as an independent state). Sitting here in Edinburgh the Irish and Singaporean solutions to the Westminster problem appear the most attractive.

You just need to look at recent developments in Scotland. The Scottish government politically outmanoeuvred the Westminster government with their recent budget, overturning the winter fuel payment cut despite months of labour messaging that the SNP were leaving pensioners out to dry this winter. Anas Sarwar on BBC and STV every other day, crying that the SNP were the sole architects behind poor Scottish pensioners being left cold. Within days, Westminster announces that they will start passing bills affecting Scotland regardless of whether or not the subject at hand is a devolved matter. The powers that be in the centralised UK state will never allow any real power from leaving their control.

There's a reason why the PM is also know as First Lord of the Treasury. They weld unrivalled power to shape budgets for every other ministry. Local governments can't shape their own regional economic policy without first securing Treasury approval. Sadiq Khan and TFL had to beg for money during COVID from the Treasury to avoid going bankrupt. Devolution of power only went so far when final say still remained in Whitehall.
