The EcoSphere (Amazon link: amzn.to/1OQ4WxB) is a self-sustaining ecosystem in an enclosed glass container. By providing each sphere a bit of sunlight, each sphere will be able to self-sustain for years.

In the 1990's I created a lesson on self contained environments for my science students. I used 1 liter "Big Slam" soda bottles (straight sides large mouth). Three sprigs of anacaris , an aquarium grass, 2 glass shrimp (from local fresh water river) and a pair of guppies. The food cycle was very similar; the grass would die off at one end, the fish would eat the dying leaves, the shrimp would then reprocess the fish "poop" and the grass would absorb it. We sealed the bottles by hot melt gluing the caps. Total cost per student less than $2.00. Lifespan of the experiment up to 2 years survival. It is very important to leave about 3" of air at the top of the

Comment from Amazon: Would you enjoy seeing a death trap? I would not, so I created a little better home as I best I could care for them. Couple weeks ago, I saw the link to this intriguing ecosystem from a friend's facebook post and immediately so interested getting these little cute shrimps home. I read couple 1 star reviews and gets the hint that rather than a self sustaining ecosystem, it is simply a death trap. With the benefit of doubt, I researched more about the science behind ecosystem. The brutal fact became clear as I learned more: Manufactures trap a very unique shrimp specie that has very longevity up to 20 years in a eco sphere that cuts their live span to a fraction of couple years, which is still very long compare to what people expect out of a pet, and call it eco sphere. Sorry, there is absolutely nothing eco about it. it just these shrimp can survive the harsh condition of no food for a long time. They will get smaller in size as time pass and they will not reproduce in this sealed glass environment. Additionally, these shrimps prefer in shade rather than in the light, this eco sphere leave the shrimp no place to hide out at all...I will not continue to bore you with more brutal fact as there are already some detailed comments about it and some simple research will tell you more than what you would like to know. So... I still really want the shrimp, but not the death trap part. I decided to set up a little fish bowl myself to welcome the shrimps. I do not have the time to care for a large fish tank, filters and all that, but I know I can care for a small fish bowl. When I say care, there is really not much after the initial set up. Here is what I got in the picture: - 1.5 gallon fish bowl - Rocks - Instant Ocean Marine Salt - Bottled/purified water - Anubias plant (comes in a tube) Not many fresh water plant can survive in brackish/salty-ish water, but the anubias seems doing ok so far. - Marimo moss ball plant. That's the green ball you are seeing. It is shrimp's kitchen. The green moss ball is a plant that grows slowly in that shape. My shrimps love to mounch on it after couple laps of swimming. I do not feed them additional food. - A toy house. It made of clay I think. The shrimp love to hang out on the front porch if you look the second picture closely. They also like to hide under or climb on the house. - Opea Ula shrimp! It might be cumbersome than just getting the ecosphere, but I feel the shrimps are truly happier and less stressed. It was fun to play with my own idea,too. It's worth the effort. With self growing food (moss ball) and plenty hide out spots, they are active. I remember the first time I put them in there, they swim around for hours before finally took a break to explore all the spaces they can get into between the rocks. It is enjoyable to watch them chop the moss ball hair with that super tiny claws and shovel all of that into the mouth after a long day at work(They are small, I had to shine the flash light to see the claws in action). That's my two cents there. How would you like to purchase them is your choice, I just wish you know the fact and get the most enjoyment out of your choice :)

DIY is an alternative for this also. It's a simple concept so recreating wouldn't be difficult. Price point on aquarium and related projects usually incentivizes creative alternatives like this. Haha. Learning more about our earth and it's inhabitants is the plus here. This is a great way of conservation and isolating specific species of creatures. A good balanced ecosystem has to be humane or else it is a dead one. Imo

They sell them at gift shops at aquariums but other than that only seen them on amazon I just bought one can't wait to get it. These freaks yelling about oh no shrimp need lots of space in a huge tank I had ghost shrimp in a huge tank and they died in a few weeks id rather try my luck with this.

Well I use to buy my tanks all the most expensive stuff so doubt that was it anyways this time I can't mess up even if they live a year ill be happy. You keep saying this is a shitty life they have friends in the tank at least on top of that I don't plan on shaking it around or being mean to them. I eat shrimp so I mean whats small shrimp really but dinner I do really like to look at shrimp its going to be a great pet for me.

You have no idea who I am you judge me on how I treat little shrimp much smaller than the shrimp people eat tons of everyday get real. If you think about it they have the brain size of bugs if you care about these shrimp this much you i'm guessing would get mad if I killed a fly for getting near me its just crazy to me someone would care so much over this.

I wanna make my own. I have the orb thingy. And I don't know what kind of plant to put in it: I want a freshwater plant with snails and brine shrimp. But I don't think brine shrimp live in fresh water, do they?

Xdium yeah but they have to have a fresh water type somewhere... I wanna use freshwater snails because saltwater ones are too hard to keep alive in a closed system
@Shavenhamster
@Shavenhamster 7 жыл бұрын
Cherry shrimp are a fresh water species, you would have to let the bowl establish it self with some plants. Look up Diana Walstad and Walstad bowls.

For the record, birds can do nasty work on a keyboard. Might wanna keep them off the MacBook. ;) I work in a workshop where we fix Macbooks, and we've had one such case where a domestic bird "attacked" the keyboard. Didn't just settle for the keys, either. Tore up the electronics below.
