Seeing all of those River organisms was very entertaining! Your knowledge on biology and ecology is amazing! Seeing those strange inverts and that mosquito fish and hearing their role was great, but seeing the snake was the coolest part. Great job Ben, can’t wait to see what else you will film!

Those flatter insects look like stoneflies. They're incredibly sensitive, so that river is really healthy! Also- we get dozens of those mosquito fish in my creek. I'm assuming those guys are good turtle or snake food? I'm trying to determine what sorts of predators might be lurking nearby for me to try and catch

Okay cool, thanks for helping me out with the ID! From what I can tell, everything eats mosquito fish. Their only real defense is speed and being able to hide.

Great work as always Ben! This ecosystem highlight series is really interesting and incredibly well done, I have thoroughly enjoyed each episode and seeing all of those river creatures was fascinating. I hope these videos are reaching the educators and general audience that they are intended for, you are putting in a lot of work and it's clear that you care about this project, the videos deserve to be utilized in every place they can be! Can't wait for more! - Harrison and Evan

Amazon sells those Mosquito fish by the dozens or hundreds, I get them for turtle food. They are avid breeders and really quick. The turtle loves them. He’ll be released back where I found the raided nest last summer. I took the uneaten, exposed eggs home (3) and 70 days later one hatched. It was September and a bit cold here for me to release him then. He was size of a grape. I’ll be releasing him in the next few weeks. He’s about 3 1/2” long now.

Wow, didn't realize that they were that popular in the pet trade. Glad the turtle liked them and that he will be ready for release soon!

The Wild Report my little Eastern Painted turtle loves to eat those mosquito fish. You really have to watch them and keep numbers in check. They are very prolific breeders. They sell them and the grass they love to hide in on Amazon and most pet food sites.

I had a question. I get a lot of spotted salamanders in my pool every summer, and they die from the chlorine before we can get to them. I was wondering if I caught a live one, if I could keep it as a pet? (Other people can give some advise if they want) I’ve done my research and I’m ready to keep one. I hate to see them hurt or dead and I would like to save one.

Man, these vids almost make me want to enter an ecological study. Almost, cuz I bet the actual study won't be nearly as fun as these videos... ^_^'' Looking forward to the wetlands episode, since I live very close to freshwater tidal wetlands
