I can't understand why UN should get itself involved in regional issues. Sahel states are already making progress as a result of their decisions to pull out of Ecowas to face their security and economic challenges. Democracy is a deceit in Africa going by the behaviors of the politicians in constantly looting and bringing debt burden on their people. When has UN become a body that forces two unfriendly friends together? The sahel states' leaderships are wholly accepted by their people. I think UN should leave them to handle their affairs, if not their intervention will be seen as recolonization move.

The United Nations Secretary General [UNSG] through its Deputy should be incredibly careful that it is not being partisan and used by Tinubu the Chair of ECOWAS for his own personal benefits to save face. AES is not obligatory under international law to remain in any regional or international organisation they are not in favour of. In international or interregional alliances, consent is freely given and freely withdrawn [see VCLT]. UNSG knows this. Thus, the UNSG should ensure that it is not being used by one side or taking side. More importantly, a legitimate question here is: Where was the UNSG over nine months ago when ECOWAS put economic roadblocks on AES path by Tinubu Chair of ECOWAS and President of Nigeria simultaneously cut off electricity to Niger that was paid for, made live hard and hash for the people of Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali? What did the UNSG say or do? How does it now justify its’ present action overture is in good faith, and that it is a credible and ethical broker? The UNSG must know that that is not how reconciliation happen in the manner it is putting forth. There have to be moments of truth telling, prosecution for the consequences of electricity cut off to Niger by Tinubu President of Nigeria among others, reparation, and guarantees of non-recurrence. Succinctly, the AES can still have some sort of relations with ECOWAS independent of maintaining their [AES] confederation. Critical analysis of ECOWAS shows that it has nothing attractive or promising for the AES to look to. The critical analysis of the remaining countries in ECOWAS are on shaky ground. It is not in the interests of AES Members country and their people to be making U-Turn now. AES are better off consolidating their confederation. If ECOWAS has humility, it can learn something about sound, humanistic, and effective governance from AES.

Unless they are going to establish true democracy, by true I mean a system devoid of political parties and a political class. The system of democracy which would serve Africa better, is one based on the direct elections of qualified citizens to any and every position in a governmental system. From ordinary reps to the President, they can only be contracted to serve five years.
