Note that the 2 ohm resistor for which we are calculating the potential difference is in series with the 3 ohm resistor this means the the current flowing through the two resistors is the same but the PD is not. However if we add their respective PD's they should give us 12V. PD would have been 12V if the resistors were all parallel to each other
