I was in the audience as this was filmed. In August, 1978, a friend and I were in the audience for this segment of the short-lived (only 3 episodes aired) "MARY" variety show. We were picked out of line as we had dressed up a bit (I had pants & a skinny tie on, she wore a sun dress - most folks were in tees and shorts), then seated right behind Swoosie Kurtz and in front of Michael Keaton in a part of the studio where another skit was filmed. It was a parody of a Samsonite commercial, and it never aired. This sketch was hilarious though, and did make it on air! So glad I got to see it. (Besides Kurtz and Keaton, others in Mary's entourage included David Letterman, Dick Shawn and James Hampton.)

If they had come up with a few more skits like this one, they probably would have lasted a few episodes longer! This one was pretty funny and timely as well. She tried another skit based on SNF but it wasn't really that funny unfortunately. Thanks so much for posting this clip!
