Labour Minister stated that prisoners will only be released with UK civilians safety in mind. Why were they locked up in the first instance?

Punishment most people in jail are not dangerous. Any a small percentage of those jailed are violent. The idea is you let the non dangerous ones out so we can fill the space with the new dangerous ones coming in Do you fully comprehend that 700 spaces left in UK jails is INSANELY SMALL and how close we are to not being able to jail people. If this is not done a murderer who is sentenced in 3 weeks time may not go to jail because they are full. 3 weeks time!!!!!!

Releasing prisoners saves money. Not prosecuting criminals saves money. What a novel idea. I think everyone will be on their best behavior and crime will disappear. Just make every prisoner who is released sign a statement that they will be good.

Dan does a poor job here to reassure people and to explain the positives of releasing prisoners early. Prisons are massively overcrowded, there is space for 70k but they house around 120k currently. It costs about 40k a year to house a prisoner so it is to reduce costs. There are many petty crime prisoners who get too long of a sentence, there are also people who get short sentences and they have been proven to be harmful, for these people it can ruin they're lives and then they can no longer contribute to society - to growth. Obviously the worst criminals in society won't be considered for release early. Labour have a program to build more mental health facilities in communities to hopefully lower crime. Prisons are a disgrace and more needs to be done. It's ok saying build more prisons but as the labour mantra goes "prevention is cheaper than the cure"

How do you decide who does and doesn't deserve to be there? I'm assuming those there are all guilty of some crime and were sentenced in court.

@@dan003 Non violent crimes and those deemed by professionals to not pose a risk to society. There are thousands of actual violent criminals who DO pose a threat to society still free because their court cases are jammed up in a broken court system.

@@dan003vast majority of prisoners only serve 50% of their sentence and the remainder on license if no issues with behaviour whilst inside. The proposal is to select certain prisoners to be released after 40% of sentence and remainder on license instead of 50%.

We imprison so many people who do not need to be there. Prisons are the new asylums. Many people get punished for untreated mental health difficulties, addiction, trauma, and social issues. I trust the government will do right by the people who have been deeply affected by the prison system. I think the policy is right, though it needs to strike the balance and reassure communities of safety.

The prison situation is a lose lose. If the prisons are full then criminals can’t get sentenced. If the criminals inside are released early then they could reoffend. Either way somethings got to happen.
