Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio broke down after several takes of this scene, saying, "We are not animals!"

No other scene like this is half as enthralling or engaging. And, notice, there's no music. It's raw, powerful acting and I hate the fact that Harris wasn't nominated now.

What really gets me are her half-open eyes with that blank stare.....that´s the real thing, and hardly ever gets shown. Movie deaths usually have neatly closed eyes to spare the audience the unsettling view.

The scenes with the camera on the floor facing up at the other actors that don't feature Mary Elizabeth is because she couldn't handle doing this scene. After laying there and getting slapped around a few times, she screamed at the director and stormed off the set so they had to make due without her to finish the scene, hence the shots without her in it. The whole experience was pretty awful and traumatic for just about everything, that woman still won't talk about what happened during the making of this movie lol

This is one of the best scenes in movie history.. (starting some 5 minutes before this video).. Everyone was perfect and Eddie deserved an Oscar for sure.. Such a shame....

The making-of on the DVD describes without any hipocrisy the nightmare the shooting of "The Abyss" was : delay, wait, stress, exhaustion, exposure, executives' anger and concerns, the director's tough and uncompromising will or ideas.... all the crew seemed ready to crack, but the one dude who kept the whole bunch together was... James Cameron himself, enduring even more sufferings and pressure than every other in the team. As riveting as the movie itself, recommended after watching the film !

@Robological You're not respecting a person's feelings by 'pissing yourself laughing' at learning of them. It's low and disrespectful. This is a powerful scene, and we gotta be gentle about the reactions to it. And don't call me a moron, please.

@hopecandecieve If you're an Army vet, I'd be surprised if this scene didn't break you down. I reckon that a lot of our servicepeople have had situations where they had to pull a downed comrade through a tough situation and I can imagine a lot of them saying the kinds of things Ed Harris said.

because humans have a hard time accepting death, you see someone dying or dead, you just go into denial. It takes a couple seconds to sink in that this is not a person anymore, it´s just a body left over.

@Robological Even if that's true, it's still quite disrespectful given the context. And don't you worry, I'm not pissy with YOU, keep your pantyhose on. And disrespectful people can fuck off for all I care.

@tuberinmyhead A man (I presume) after my own heart. There are too few of us alpha males, and the beta male wimps have convinced females that what we do is bad, but evolutionarily, women need and want real he-men to verbally and physically pound them, as evidenced by this lifesaving scene. Thank goodness for this screenwriter who knows the score.
