I’ve liked the Breeders cover but it kinda sucks they changed the lyrics. I think the 2nd to last verse in the original is important to the song. Still like it though.

Got to see them open for TMBG at the 9_30 Club in DC in 89 or so. The Ed's asked my friend and I to be their cheering section, and we were like um, sure why not! Great concert and bought their cassette afterwards :)

Nope - this is the original. Song was written by Dom Leone, who died in 1989. Performed by his band Ed's Redeeming Qualities - covered by the Breeders (Carrie B. of Ed's performed some with the Breeders too).

1989... I was in eighth grade.. in Melrose Park... attending Robert Louis Stevenson when I wrote this song. Smoking unfiltered camels. I was fifteen years old.. Yeah, I remember this. Drivin' On 9 for Dom Leone. Cursed song that killed him, then handed to the Breeders, what happened to them I wonder.

Y'know I first heard of Ed's Redeeming Qualities seeing that they were opening for They Might Be Giants at a show in DC, maybe at the old 9:30 club. I thought they sounded cool--great name for a band. I loved this song on the Breeders album and was so stoked to see that it was by Ed's Redeeming Qualities back then. However I never did come across an album by then and never heard any of their songs until finding this one on youtube. This is such a sweet song and it's so great for road trips. And really just from the Breeder's cover and their name and knowing that they opened for TMBG, they sound just like you'd think, really great. Can't wait to hear more which will probably happen in the next few mintues.

Route 9 that runs East-West from Boston through Worcester, Amherst and terminating in the very small town of Windsor. The lyric: "Looking for 138" would refer to Route 138 running South from Boston and intersecting with 9. When the Breeders sang this song, the changed Route 138 to Route 130 which is in Cape Cod and is nowhere near intersecting with Route 9. However, The Pixies (Kim Deal's first band) were from Amherst which Route 9 runs through and there is no Route 130 or 138 anywhere near Amherst. As an Amherst teenager, I always drove down route 9 listening to this song and wondering which Motel and Pine Trees she was referring to. I didn't know it was a cover ;) But Kim Deal is from Boston, so she would've been familiar with both Route 9 and Route 138 It is unclear to this day why Ms. Deal changed the lyric to Route 130. If you're reading this Kim, please elaborate. I'm willing to wait 20+ years for clarification as this has been bugging me for at least that long.

I don’t even hate the breeders version - but this version is so far above theirs, it’s such a huge quality gap between the cover and the original in this case. this band is phenomenal and way too underrated. this song makes me emotional every time I hear it
