Ed grew up playing the piano, so he was steeped in musical theory, he knew all the rules and so the fact that he threw them out the window with such a cavalier disregard for convention Is it testament to his bravery and fearlessness when it came to artistic expression. He truly was the Mozart of our time.

Ed had a fractured wrist for part of that tour. Wore a partial cast on his right wrist. But neither the fracture nor the cast hindered him in the least. I saw him in Philly in ‘82 just after the fracture and the man was on fire, playing everything in his repertoire, and omitting nothing from his stage performance - even did sideways leaps off the speaker stacks during Eruption. It was mystifying to watch. Oddly, the wrist fracture is never mentioned, and no photos are ever shown. But I think it only bolstered his legend as the most amazing guitarist and performer.

Jeff Beck used the same technique as part of his intro to his song “Guitar Shop” in 1989; obviously EVH did it first. EVH used Jeff Beck’s technique, from Jeff’s song “Where Were You” from Jeff’s 1989 album, on Van Halen’s newly recorded track 1996’s “Me Wise Magic” for the “ Best Of Van Halen Volume 1” album. In this case, Jeff used the technique first. EVH was back stage at Jeff Beck’s concert in LA in 1989. Both of them were learning each other’s ridiculously difficult techniques and molding them into their own style of guitar playing. And the guitar world is better because of it. I was listening to Jeff Beck before EVH came along. EVH breathed new life into guitar playing in both technique and sound. Unlike most people, I did not choose “sides”. Why should I when I can listen to both geniuses. May they both RIP…

"slight different" .....RIGHT. ... you know what is crazy to me is the supernatural ability Edward had to somehow...effortlessly keep all his other strings muted perfectly at all times. I struggle trying to do it at bedroom volumes and his guitar was basically nuclear. I mean especially back then when everybody had multiple full stacks dimed! If you just waved his guitar in the air and didn't even touch the strings, it would still sound like a light saber

To see EVH perform live is like nothing on this world. His music was not perfect and definitely not made for the mainstream. His “brown” sound was deep, edgy, and was like a warning. Cobain delivered a similar message with “grunge” and changed the trajectory of music. God is not a politician, lawyer, or a doctor. He is a Musician❤️

Watching Jeff Beck in concert will leave your jaw on the floor as well. The sounds he produces is other worldly. Jeff was always playing a level higher live than what was on his albums.
