What a beautiful voice you have! I feel like you were holding back a bit. I think if you were to sing a song with live music you have more to give! Seorang Syed The standard of English tested in SPM papers is not the same level of difficulty as English in IGCSE papers. While IGCSE IS an international exam, there is no reason why English in Malaysia shouldn’t be taught at an international standard (thus ‘prioritised’). We do live in a globalised world and while it is important that Bahasa is high in standard English should not be seen as any less valuable, don’t you think?

Stefany Soh first, you need to know that English is our 2nd language in Malaysia. We have to consider many aspects before implementing something to our education system. People pick up differently when learning a language. Some might learn it very fast (bcs they use the language every day esp to communicate) and some might not. IF we tested them using higher level of English (for example from IGCSE), that might not be fair for some people. English taught in school is already sufficient for the students to actually speak and write using the language. That’s the reason why we have different exams (IGCSE, MUET, APTIS) so that we can further learn and develop our English level. We still have many students who are still struggling to learn the language even it’s taught since primary school 😭 . I just don’t think it’s relevant.

Seorang Syed Well I respect your opinion, but similarly, Malay or any other language is difficult to non native speakers! Sympathy must be issued to both the native and non-native English speakers. However, the difficulty of a language should not be reduced for the comfort of those who struggle with it- it is after all through struggle and hard work that we learn. Malay may be hard for non- native speakers but the standard isn’t dropped to give them an easier time. I get when you mean about Malay being the national language which is why it IS important. But English is just as important for its functionality both within and beyond the nation. After all, nations progress through global interactions as well as intra- country coordination. So English should be prioritised regardless of its status as the ‘second language’ which is why I’m commending her for her effort, because she knows that the world is wider than any single country.
