He did not have lack of talent. He was a powerhouse and a workhorse. He had lack of guidance and encouragement, lack of budget, and simply went too fast.

YES YES YES !!!!!! Thank you for your wonderful and profoundly excellent Ed Wood bio, I have watched “ Plan 9” SO MANY TIMES. I can’t tell you how profoundly beautiful and soothing it has been in my life, I discovered it in 1990 and it remains “ My favourite movie” of all time!!!!!!! Ed Wood was an amazingly driven ARTIST and he will be remembered when many others fall away…peace

''You know . . . it's a funny thing . . .'' I discovered Eddie a decade before you with ''PLAN 9'' on a late-night ''Monster Movie'' show on a rainy night, and suffice it to say I've been questioning ''reality'' ever since. :) My reply to those who say Eddie is the ''worst director'' and ''Plan 9'' is the ''worst movie'' ever is this: A ''bad'' movie is one that is dull, stilted and uninteresting; ''Plan 9'' is many things, but NOT ''dull, stilted and uninteresting''! ''Plan 9'' is like an E-Ticket ride into another DIMENSION that is virtually indescribable, lol. The wonder of Eddie was that his utter lack of talent was matched only by his boundless sincerity and enthusiasm. I often tell people that if Eddie could make not only ONE movie but SEVERAL, then none of us has an excuse to not do ANYTHING. CAN YOU PROVE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN?!

Wood was a marine during WW2. He served in a coastal defence regiment in California and as a clerk (due to medical problems leaving him not being up to combat. He was fired on recovering corpses at Tarawa's Betio island. That was as close as he ever got to combat.

There are people who, if given the chance, would rather see Plan Nine from Outer Space, than the latest Academy Award winning film. The way things are with movies these days who could blame them. I wouldn't be surprised if someone saw something like Plan Nine from Outer Space and decided this proved they could make their own films on zero budget. Anything that inspires someone to create is never bad.

Excellent point. There are movies and directors today who have 100x the money Ed had, but produce movies that are far worse. Film critic Gene Siskel said of the movie "Ed Wood", that it "should be required viewing in every film school in America"'.

It should be noted that, whatever you have to say about Ed Wood -- or Al Adamson and Roger Corman, for that matter -- he made films that we're still talking about today. Sure, it's easy to mock his films (MST3K did so on three of them), but they have a style of their own and are fascinating to watch. Unlike, say, Coleman Francis.... The difference is that Ed never really knew what he was doing or how to distribute his films. Corman had AIP, and later New Horizons -- and Adamson eventually created his own distribution company with Sam Sherman. And both had long filmmaking careers as a result, making films that people appreciate to this day. Plus, both Corman and Adamson had a ready-made market: The drive-in theater. Ed was just a few years early for that, and no major studio would touch his films for any legitimate theater. But, in the end, you can't deny that Ed made his movies HIS way. You have to admire him for that.

Bela Lugosi's "I have no home" speech in "Bride of the monster" is easily the greatest speech in the history of cinema. How bad could the director who filmed it be?
@kat_lynx

Absolutely. And with the absolute commitment Lugosi had with his script (and modern acceptance of comicbook scifi logic) you can absolutely buy even the "ATOMIC SUPERMEN" part out of just sheer talent and professionalism the man had in his acting

The random Lugosi material (in Plan 9) is test footage for "The Vampire's Tomb" made to show to investors. "The Ghoul Goes West" is mostly a Western remake of Bride of the Monster.

Well he liked the film Dracula so he atleast had good taste, and helped Bela, and the Vampira actress out when they were very broke, plus looking now at his films, they didn't feel that low budget, he had some action, with some flying saucer effects, other films back then barely used any effects especially if they were very low budget like that,. So I think he was a much better director than people gave him credit for.

One of the greatest masterpieces on youtube is the Rifftraxx Plan 9 - Ive used it to fall asleep to 100s of times, watched Ed Wood over 20 times and still crack up thinking about a guy in the 50s who made a film called Glen or Glenda .......( Burton's film is literally RLM Mike Stoklasa favorite film btw ♥)

Love this video since Ed is also my favorite director of all time. I do have to correct you though, Lugosi did not fight the rubber octopus. This was confirmed by almost everyone that it was stunt man Eddie Parker who also wrestled Tor in the lab. Although I believe it was Lugosi carrying “Janet” through the swamp..in actuality though it was a fake mannequin. You can see this if you look closely.

Also Billy Zane produced and stared in “I Woke Up Early athe Day I Died” based on an Ed Wood script and staring a plethora of who’s who actors (Johnathan Taylor Thomas, Ron Perelman, Ertha Kit, Christina Ricci among many others) all without a single line of dialogue spoken in the film.

Glen or Glenda is certainly a masterpiece and so far my favorite of his movies. Tim Burton did a great job with the biopic. Wood´s movies also show that especially that during the time they were made it was a matter of money if you could do quality pictures or not. The George Sanders Version of Dorian Gray made as a big studio movie still was superior to the cheaper B-movies or TV adaptions of the story. So if Ed Wood had access to a big studio he might have done movies that really became blockbusters. William Castle is another example. He made wonderful B-movies but when he did Rosemaries Baby within the big studiosystem he really made an outstanding masterpiece.

@@glenniekiwi In many ways they're completely different. Wiseau was a wealthy man who blew his money on something that a normal director would've made 20 minutes & made for $50,000 not $6,000,000! Wood didn't have money outside contributions from his parents & basically exploited like Lugosi, Talbot & eventually Vampira to star in stuff that an 6 year old couldve written better, which shows how much of a clever salesman he was. Bizzarly you could make Plan 9 or any of Woods films today. It kinda would be akin to a Uni drop out befriending Tom Daley, a Porn actress & random washed thespians, getting a pimp or drug-dealer to fund it, stealing all the props from a school storage unit & then random camcorder tapes to fill up the runtime If you think that sounds crazy, well how Wood got his films funded is equilvent to that Wiseau Im not so sure because he didn't have any USPs other than I look like a zombie & I've got literal money to burn Breen I feel is closer to Wiseau if you ask me
@glenniekiwi
@glenniekiwi Жыл бұрын
@@CalRoberts-gx3jt haha nice analysis. I didn't want to go into a full PhD on the financials or the technological differences as they are obvious. How Wisseau got his money is somewhat shady. Ed Wood would do anything like exploit down and out actors or Tor to get his films financial backing. So you could make an argument that their personalities and motivation were incredibly similar such as they were both nobodies that wanted to be somebodies in the film industry. And both are now famous....it's a shame Ed didn't live to see he was appreciated like Tommy did though.

Awesome & vert informative video Ed Wood is the last thing most artists want to be & while he certainly isn't someone to look at for artistic merit. His eccentricity, use of resources & ability to make trash that's such to watch. Is something that should inspire anyone who wants to get behind a film camera This is coming from someone who hates everyone of Woods films but appreciates how hard it is to get films made If a Uni student & his friends rented some cameras, stole some costumes, squatted in an abandoned warehouse, befriended a porn actress & hired Tom Daley to do a day's filming for couple of hundred dollars, then you've got something as impressively bad as a Wood picture. That's 1000 times more enjoyable than half the films that gain awards buzz. & would go much better with a drink and an extra large popcorn Also Burtons Biopic while being superb is inaccurate, he portrayed Wood as a mixture of himself & Butters from South Park When he was actually a more morbid & depressive

It's so sad that people today don't understand what makes people and artists like him so interesting is that they are so different from the others and this new movement these days is going to destroy that, but the people who follow it are that intelligent , that they think the movement is actually helping the different. 🤦🏻‍♂️😑🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm so glad to find someone who express so well what I think of Ed Wood's films. By watching all the films of the time that I could find, I came to the conclusion that they were not the worse of the period, because I was never bored. And if we had a good time, how can we say it's plainly bad? I think that I came to understand better what he had done by making films myself with 5 bucks. Trying your best, and do a whaterver that is but that has an interest because it's honest and sincere. I'm progressing so far, but this first attempt might give you a good laugh: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGO9lpWLbt1kfLc
