Part of why the villains are lackluster is because they changed plans partway. Valka was originally the antagonist of the second film, mirroring Stoick in the first film. Drago was originally the villain of this film, and would basically have been a combination of himself in 2 and Grimmel here. They decided against it for some dumb reason like, "not tryna be out here turning kids against their moms."

Ngl you have to watch the series, let me tell you something you need to know it's divided in 2 parts, first part has 2 seasons 20 episodes each and events take place after the first movie, Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk and that's an amazing introduction to the second part of the series which is called Race to the edge this part has 6 seasons 13 episodes each and events take place 1/2 years before second movie the story is crazy, villains are really good (one of them is fandoms favourite, yes the fandoms favourite is not from the movie lmao, but i'm not surprised this mf is amazing, and when Eret was talking about Grimmel, Hiccup said "we've dealt with this kind before" he was talking about this guy from RTTE, many people says that Grimmel is a discount version of him (and i agree tbh), one more thing about him... he kinda predicted Stoick's death, he said Hiccup is "to pure, to innocent, which will get you or SOMEONE YOU LOVE killed, how fucking right he was), and you will meet many amazing characters (their friends and allies), some unexpected plot twists, and you will understand why Hiccup tried talk to Drago, one more thing.. the dragons. so many new species for example the one from the book in first movie, like the skrill (amazing dragon) or whispering death (and the bigger and crazier wersion of it called screaming death), but there are even more dragons that are worth seeing in my opinion this is worth watching, and you won't regret that, so if you want i highly recommend it

It's rare to see a trilogy be consistently good from the start to finish. It's one of the reasons why HTTYD is my fav DreamWorks trilogies.

Of course they made Brother Toothkess fall in love with a Snow-Fury. All jokes aside, probably the best 3rd Entry in the Dreamworks trilogies. Although not CGI, and only 1 film, Prince of Egypt is still peak Dreamworks imo.

1:00:27 yep, that is literally the ONLY time throughout the ENTIRE franchise we ever see her parents. they’ve been mentioned (not named) before, but the ONLY time we ever see her parents is right there. and it took me FOUR YEARS to realize they were there. i grew up with this series, seeing this movie in the theater at 10 years old MESSED ME UP, i was so sad, and happy at the same time. though, i can proudly say that for some reason in the tiny little brain i had (and still have), it immediately clicked for me that they were getting married the moment i saw snow. i have no idea why, i just KNEW IT. it wasn’t like “oh, they’ve been alluding to it the whole movie so it’s probably now-“ nah, i ain’t that smart, i just knew it somehow

someone has probably said this before, but the reason the light fury exists is because they established MANY times in the past that toothless was the last night fury. a lot of people were mad at the light fury because they wanted a night fury instead, and just didn’t get good vibes from her, but that would’ve honestly, imo, made toothless’ significance decrease. he’s the last of his kind, the kind that is considered “the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself.” he is the GOAT. the king of dragons, is the puny little guy who is the last night fury. don’t get me wrong, it would’ve been cool to have another night fury, but i think they made a good decision to throw a whole ‘nother species in there. while being quite similar, they are not the same. i mean, one is white and sparkly, while the other is pitch black. the species are like cousins. (YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN, NOT LITERALLY, THAT’S INCEST)

1:04:05 you need to watch the shows then. if you want a good httyd antagonist, race to the edge is the show for you. there’s also two before it (though if you ask me, they’re all the same show, just with different subtitles. it’s all “dragons,” you just also got riders of berk, defenders of berk, and race to the edge) but rtte has THE BEST antagonist in the entire franchise. viggo is THE GOAT. there may be a good bunch of stormfly, but there’s a great bunch of tons of new species of dragons. some that you’ll probably see if you went back and watched the last two movies. (the dragons in the water that took toothless when valka kidnapped hiccup were properly introduced in race to the edge, which started a year after the second movie came out) (also, i kinda agree, the third one is amazing, but i can’t agree at the same time, because i legit don’t have a favorite, i love them all too much to choose. i’m a coward, can’t bring myself to. i grew up with this stuff man, no one can make me)

A thing I like about the bad guys not seeming as big a threat after the first one, is because they literally weren’t. They weren’t really planning on killing any humans, at least not until they got all the dragons. The second and third movie antagonists were more threats against their way of life. While the first one was actually a threat against their life. It’s also somewhat realistic that as Hiccup and the others grew older, they had an easier time with their human enemies.

honestly the 3rd movie could have done well without an antagonist as well, we dont have spce on berk so we need to move and toothless found love and in the end decided to move to the hidden world and the rest follow the alpha, im sure you could plush out this idea more and find better reasons but in the end i really dont think we needed drago v2.0 but with brain rather then muscle.

Honestly I love this trilogy, but I do think it would have been really cool to see the book series get accurately adapted. The upside is that this toothless is a lot cooler than book toothless, who was basically one of those little green dragons. Though the ending of this was basically the same with the dragons leaving. Although I didn’t realize the book series was so long. I stopped reading it way before it finished.
