...and a load of other stuff too. Well, when you have a 1000w laser in the workshop you might as well see what else you can do with it! We got our power back on and the boys from Narran brought back another 1000w pulsed laser so we could finish cleaning John's rusty Range Rover chassis. But then we got a bit distracted and went a little off piste trying the laser out on all kinds of things including steak and chips, egg on toast, popcorn, smores and even a Cadbury's Creme Egg!
Edd China's Workshop Diaries Episode 43 - Fun with lasers; Cooking stuff with a laser and finishing the cleaning of the rusty Range Rover chassis!

Unless you get it dipped to remove internal rust I would say #scrap It's been used for true off roading in the past, so no doubt lots of nice mud got inside the frame, where it's probably sat, all nice and damp. I would guess that if you stood that thing on end and whacked the frame with a large hammer you would get a ton of rust breaking loose and falling out.

Probably doing it as a promotion and for a cool video with a laser. A buddy dipped his frame and it is the only way to go for rust removal. I expect that truck would of been in a scrap bin a long time ago without Edd China making videos on it. Still neat to watch a pro work on it.

@@Swarm509 Indeed, surely dipping for a chassis once you've stripped it down anyhow is the way to go, and deals with the hard to reach internal parts too. I can see the laser having uses on repairs in awkward areas, saving having to strip off so many parts or cutting out more body work for access.

#Scrap it! Just because you got most of the corrosion off of the outside, short of cutting inspection holes, there is really no way of determining the state of the interior of the main chassis rails. Definitely #SCRAP No matter how much I would love to see you tackle the repairs on the chassis, I can't get over the fact that the amount of rust you've removed already, has weakened the chassis. It might still be strong enough for road use if you do a proper repair job, but I would expect that chassis to buckle very soon if John is planning to go off road again. PS. Thanks for an excellent show, and happy anniversary.

Hi edd/Paul. Great show, thanks for your efforts. Another product from a negative crankcase pressure is that any oil seals are assisted in there job by the negative pressure inside the engine compared to atmospheric pressure. Without negative pressure you only have the tension off the lip of the seal and its backing springs resist the oil leaking, however, if you have positive pressure from the engine blowby the lip seals will be lifted from the shafts and the oil blown out.Very common on old minis as you would know.

The original part is a history of this vehicule and your history inself. Wherever if not is a safe for standar driving, or the fix not is the way, replace is a only solution. Obviusly not is a "new" vehicule, and not is for use in hard offroad driving any more. Grettings from Argentina, good work Edd, Poul and team.

You can open the bleeder valve when pushing the pistons in and then replace the rest of the fluid with fresh fluid when you are done with the brake job. I built a pressure bleeder out of a reservoir cap with a valve stem in it and a tiny "tyre inflator" that doesnt actually have the power to inflate tyres but has sufficiently low flow to bleed brakes. If you want to be really adventurous get more valve stems hoses and a pickle jar to put the dot4 in so you don't risk running out.

When I was a apprentice motorcycle mechanic in the early 1980's. Suzuki had issues with the cylinder heads on the two stroke engines. I.e. they were slightly warped, so rather than send them back to the manufacturer, we solved that issue by getting a large sheet of glass. About 2 foot square-ish, a large sheet of emery cloth, abrasive enough to remove the unevenness of the cylinder head warped parts. Move said cylinder head back and forth whilst checking on the glass surface, making sure it was completely flat. This saved time and money for both the customer and my boss. Just a thought when you mentioned the person with the 1934 Austin Nippy leaking cylinder head issues.

Since trapped water/mud may have made some parts of the chassis rust from the inside out, or even just inside to an unknown extent, you might want to look inside with an endoscope to inform the decision. But given some of the rust already present and known, saving the chassis might be more trouble than it's worth.

Really great laser process, and enjoyed the video immensely! How does the laser compare to other chassis restoration methods -- didn't you sand blast a Cerberus or a Morgan chassis on the GB television series several years ago? How does that time expenditure compare with this method? Once cleaned with the laser, are the surfaces ready and fit for welding repair? IMO #scrap the chassis -- if you're restoring the vehicle, replace the part. Canola or peanut oil, rather than water for popcorn and potatoes! Can you cook bacon?

Great show keep it coming, SO SCRAP IT!(, the inside must be even worse and down the road that could come back and bite you. So my tip of the day. When putting screws back in especially self tappers back into plastic, rotate the screw counterclockwise until it makes a click sound or dips a little so picking up the start of the tread and then you can start to screw it in and you have a better chance of not cross-threading and giving you a stripped useless fixing. You can also do this with normal bolts and the like as long as you are 90° to the thread

Definitely #fix. What would be the fun of just sourcing a new one. At least talking for myself i can learn most of doing these kind of repairs. For must of us this is probably only needed for smaller parts of our projects and just buying new is not alway an option. And besides you can always spend more video time on other projects instead of just repairing the chassis :)

Hello Edd and Paul - It’s great to see progress again on the RR chassis, the laser is very cool 😎 what a tool ! The chassis is looking much cleaner and repairable - like everything it’s a balance - time vs money but it would be good to see it repaired #FIX. DVLA rules make things interesting these days with chassis swaps might be a good talking point on the show 😉Cheers

As much as I’d like to see restoration work on the frame…. A new galvanised frame might be the most sensible way to go.

Unfortunately, I think it's #scrap - you've got no way of getting to the rust that undoubtedly hides inside the structure. It'll just be eaten up from the inside out if you repair it. If it looks bad on the outside, it's usually worse inside the enclosed spaces where moisture accumulates.

Laser is cool but the frame is too far gone. Replace it with a galvanized frame. #SCRAP

Remote starts were more popular in US as more vehicles are automatic so just need to be in park to start.

#fix..watching you repair stuff is why we like to learn best way to do same repairs ourselves. If we want to watch a show where a truck delivers a load of new parts and then you bolt together we could watch other shows that do that.

they have to weigh the time/money/effort/safety aspect and entertainment value, there are enough other things to fix/improve on this build imo cutting stuff out and then welding steel in, could do one bit as an example

If I was doing it myself I would be scrapping that chassis. But for the show it's a good project to show chassis repair.

#scrap it was absolutely fantastic seeing the laser and how well it works. Rather than weeks and weeks of episodes of sorting that rusty chassis' problems, I would like to see the episodes have more time spent on actually fixing the thing back up together again.

#FIX so satisfying to see rust disappear so easily and with just some light basically 😂 You can decide to scrap the chassis, but in this case (unless it is not safe to fix it) why would he keep that car and buy another one at all? Anyway it’s the journey that matters so thanks a lot for your videos 😊

I think there's a limit to how much time I want to spend watching someone shine a laser at something. And that would be about 30 seconds or so. I hope you get back to mechanical stuff again next week.

Definitely #fix You've come this far and it's a really interesting watch, this restoration. Plus, I would definitely enjoy watching the welding/fabrication required (sorry Paul). Too easy to throw things away these days 😁
