That's a neat idea. It beats cutting off tape by hand and risking scratching the material. Which I've done too often... Ps: you should get an external fumes extractor or a bigger diy hepa filter box (4-5 filters held in a box with tape and a fan atop) if you stand in the same area. Or you can use your toys to overengineer one for a cool video! Cutters and 3d printers often produce odourless particles that go through small cracks of the machine.
@brianblank99212 ай бұрын
Edd, honestly a decent sponsored video. Cutting with a craft knife all those detailed letters would have been a pain also likely take nearly as long without giving you some new skill. Honestly some brass screws would likely give it an even better look, might think about it just for security against the weather and the glue failing long term. It'd have been a bit of a job to get everything lined up with just screws, so even though it'd have been much quicker, you'll probably end up with a better product doing the tape then screws. Thanks for sharing, even if it was sponsored, cheers mate from cloudy Seattle!

Hello Seattle! Thank you, totally agree, the wood is 60 years old so screws could have been a little inconsistent. Also it’s always fun to try out new tech!

I was once told that boats that navigate salt as well as fresh water should have two waterlines, the bottom one for salt water and the upper one for freshwater. a salt water line would not be visible in freshwater so it would fail as the intended indicator for load distribution balance

Would be satisfying to see the laser etch into the wood on the boat itself, so the brass could be stuck flush. Brushing into things with the boat might pull those nice brass letters into the watery abyss. “Laser”
@parrotraiser6541Ай бұрын
That laser looks like a really nice, useful, tool. Much more elegant than belt-driven gantries lumbering all over the place. You had to spend a lot of time playing with your "R"s, which made me wonder if alternative adhesives might have been simpler. That wouldn't have made for such an interesting video. I expect that tool is going to apply to a lot of different situations in future videos.

Galvo lasers are great but very limited in size, i built a large co2 laser on my channel... Better to have applied the tape to the brass before cutting with the water jet. It would do it no problem. 20/20 hindsight as ever 😊
@eddchinaАй бұрын
It would also have made for a much shorter video! Very cool/hot that you’ve made your own co2 laser - at our local laser cutting place they have had fibre-optic lasers for their big machines which help with the speed and accuracy but they are industrial setups with industrial pricing! Now I’ve tried the F1 I’m very interested to play with their much bigger (and more powerful) P2 to see what I can do with that. What do you use your own laser for (or is it just because you can)?
@plasmaDaveАй бұрын

I has this issue when I was cutting double sided tape but used a honey comb bed in the end as the tape is easier to remove and the laser cuts much cleaner.

The font is perfect, but the letters literally look kind of stuck on. Why didn't you just use epoxy to attach and a few coats of varnish to seal the lettering into the plank varnish? They would look almost inlaid with permanent brassy shine, and so easy to clean.

Saphir is an interesting typeface design of Hermann Zapf's from 1953, but I rather wonder if it that was used widely in GB? I can imagine that most 1950's small boats here were likely adorned with "signwriters' serif" a sort of nondescript lettering done by those who did sign-writing which looked smart enough and generally OK. I think you will have the only craft ever to have Saphir on it!
