The producers have said all these events are shown in one episode, but it doesn't mean they are happening at the same time in real time. Theory: The wights don't go in water because they can't swim, they just sink and can't get out. So they dropped a bunch in the lake to sink to the bottom and latch the end of the chains on the dragon, while the rest held on to the rest of the chain and pulled when ready. Still a stretch because they probably can't even make minor maneuvers in the water, but I haven't heard a better idea.

I noticed the chain incident as well when it happened. My assumption was; They never established that the dead "can't" go in water, just that they don't. Why? Logically speaking, the dead are most likely, not buoyant. The dead are made up of carcasses with holes in them. They also, most likely, have deflated lungs and are full of heavy fluids, instead of oxygen. The dead are also killed by fire as the White Walkers are only killed with dragon glass or Valyrian steel. I've notice people often merge the walkers and the dead as the same thing but they are not. The dead may be able to function under water within range of their controlling walker. Remember, We saw that when a walker is killed, it's controlled dead die instantly, therefore they must have a range of control and could not just send the dead throughout the seven kingdoms without going over land......or air. Lastly, ice is made of water and salt dissolves in water. Water that is warmer than the ice also melts that ice. The ocean is probably like an ocean of acid to the walkers. SORRY EDDIE, WINTER IS HERE!

My belief is the wights can function perfectly well in fresh water (we see two jump out of the lake to drag tormund) however can't cross sea/salt water (hence why they don't swim around the wall). The Night King wanted to keep Jon and the others there, so Dany would bring the dragons. It's suspected he is green seer to knows Dany is connected to Jon and has dragons. If he simply wanted them dead (and the wights can't cross the water) the he could have thrown spear at them. He need them alive so Dany would arrive and not flee. He wanted Dany to land so the other dragons would stay in range around her, so he could spear them down.

Ok, let me sum up some ideas here.1. The got the ship chains from Hardhome.2. They had some wights or giants get down there and tie the body up.3. Travelling DOES still take a long time, its just they're skipping this time between episodes cuz they got no screentime left for that stuff.

Great observation about the White walkers, I needed to check the comments. Its clear now that the Night King has plenty of soilders to spare so however many it took to chain up the dragon was well worth the sacrifice. If they can pull it up, which of course they can (so many of them), then they can chain it up. As to travelling armies: throughout history they have successfully traversed great distances, however uncomfortably, by planning out and sticking to the rationing of food and supplies often in addition to gathering food on their trip by taking/accepting it from communities along the way by both hunting/forging as well as hunting/forging. And everyone knows they shit and piss along the way, nobody needs to waste screen time with it. Especially when the brutal realism of this fantasy is already sufficiently rendered in countless other ways in stark contrast to other popular fantasies (Lord of the Rings). Samwell Tarly's stay at the citadel was more than sufficient for me

If you watch the "after thrones" commentary after the episodes they explained that in this past season alot of time was passing by going from one place to another, they just don't spell it out like some shows/movies do saying like "1 week later" or " 2 months later" etc

no no no. The place the dragon fell was an old ship harbour. That was an anchor chain that wrapped around Viserions neck. The wights just pulled up the chain from underwater.
