It took me thirteen years to realize the duality at play in this scene: When Peter is at his lowest point, he recognizes what he's done and takes steps to make things right. When Eddie is at his lowest point, he refuses to accept what he's done and wants to hurt other people. Peter goes to a church to take the first steps to redemption and ultimately gets it. Eddie goes to a church seeking revenge and is ultimately destroyed. The symbiote corrupted Peter, but because he is, at his core, a good person, he managed to break free. Because Eddie is, at his core, is a selfish, cruel person, the symbiote utterly corrupted him and led to his death. Spider-Man 3 is a lot smarter than many people think.

Spider-Man 3 isn't necesarily a bad movie, it's just..... unfocused is what I'd call it. It's been said before but they tried to juggle too many plots at the same time, Venom, Harry as the second Green Goblin and Sandman all crammed in 2 and a half hours. (Wow, that's actually longer than expected.) Had they just focused on only adapting the Black Suit/Venom Saga, I imagine it could've been the best in the trilogy. Or maybe even franchise, as there would've been a Spider-Man 4 and maybe 5 in which they could've done the other two stories. They could've explored where the symbiote came from, (I don't think it ever happens in the movie, does it? I vaguely recall a scene where Peter has the symbiote examined by Dr. Connors but that might not be this movie.) How the city responded to their hero suddenly wearing all-black, how even before the symbiote, Eddie got screwed over by Peter, even if unintentionally. I think the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon did that last thing very well.

Actually no. The symbiote didn't corrupt Spiderman. Spiderman corrupted the symbiote. You have to understand. Symbiotes, in nature, are creatures that require another species to survive, but also offer something in return. A remora is a type of symbiote, for example - it's a fish that latches onto the bellies of sharks, and eats the parasites in their skin. The shark has to lug this smaller fish around for a bit, but it's worth it because the remora keeps it healthy. And it's no coincidence that Marvel chose to give the name 'symbiote' to the alien that infected Peter and Eddie. The Venom Symbiote is an alien. It does not understand human morality. When it bonded with Peter, it's first exposure to the human way of thinking and interacting was entirely through Peter's eyes. The thing is, Peter Parker isn't a normal human. He's a mess. He lives two lives - one where he is a hero who goes around saving the city, and the other where he is a reclusive nerd who is bullied and mocked on a regular basis. He allows himself to be bullied and mocked because he doesn't want to abuse his powers or draw attention to himself, but at the same time he resents the way he is treated. At the same time he also takes pride in his role as a hero, but he resents how certain parts of the city are determined to slander him by portraying him as a villain or a dangerous vigilante. So the symbiote looks at this and is confused. It doesn't make sense. But it's still a symbiote, and since Peter is keeping it alive, it wants to help Peter in return. So it tries to find ways to make Peter more successful and happy. Unfortunately, a lot of the successful and happy people in Peter's life and the city as a whole are assholes, so there aren't many positive examples to go off of. The symbiote sees all these confident, assertive dickbags going through life finding success, love, and money, and decides that the best way for Peter to succeed is to come out of his shell, stop being modest, and emulate them. It doesn't understand how this behaviour is immoral or obnoxious - it assumes that it's just the norm for humans. Spiderman eventually notices the effect the symbiote is having on him, and decides he doesn't want it. So, he tries to kill it. And how does he try to kill it? In the most painful way possible - exposing it to its primary weakness. Look at it from the symbiote's perspective: you've spent weeks trying to bond with this guy and help him get out of a dark period of his life, and in return he tries to torture you to death in the most painful way possible for you. Now let's look at Eddie. Eddie in the movie is depicted as far more malicious than he was in the comics. Comic Eddie was actually a good, decent guy, until Spiderman indirectly and unintentionally screwed his life over. He was publicly humiliated, he lost his job, and he lost his girlfriend. In the comics, Eddie didn't go to that church to ask God to kill Peter Parker - he went there to beg forgiveness and then kill himself. It's possible he was planning to kill himself in the movie, too. And this is where Eddie and the Venom Symbiote bond; when both are at their absolute lowest points. Venom has just been betrayed and tortured by Spiderman, while Eddie no longer has a reason to live and thinks Spiderman is at least partially responsible for the state he is in. When they merge, it's not as simple as "the symbiote corrupted Eddie." They corrupted each other. Their shared hatred of Spiderman made them obsessed with killing him, and their shared victim complex caused them both to become selfish and out for themselves. That, and the fact that the Venom Symbiote still felt it was its duty to help its host, and one of the main things which prevented Eddie from being happy was the resentment he held toward Peter. So by the Symbiote's logic, the best way to help Eddie is to kill Peter Parker so that Eddie can move on with his life. TL;DR: The Symbiote is neither corrupting nor malicious. It was actually trying to help Peter, but it didn't understand humans so it accidentally made things worse. Peter, not understanding the Symbiote's intentions, tried to torture it to death. The Symbiote, feeling vengeful and betrayed, bonded with Eddie, who was in a state of intense depression and anger. Neither Eddie nor the Symbiote were in a state where they could healthily process what they were feeling or help each other overcome it, so instead they both became even more toxic - more Venomous, you could say. In the end, it was humanity which corrupted the Symbiote - not the other way around.

A couple key symbolic things I noticed, cause this scene is absolutely stuffed with details: -Eddie actually goes to church after Peter tells him "You want forgiveness? Get religion", but its for the opposite of forgiveness -The shot of Eddie entering the church is filmed with his reflection upside down in the holy water, signifying his life turning upside down -Eddie quite literally hears a bell when he asks for Peter's death, which brings him to where he gets the power to do so -Peter is up on high, getting rid of the evil (venom), while Eddie is down low asking for a bad deed and gets consumed by the evil -The church being a place people go to repent is fittingly the setting for Peter's repentance, but its the opposite for Eddie because he is full of hatred and desire to sin

I was listening to an audio book on the novelization of this movie. And in this particular scene, I read that everytime Peter was losing the will to rip the suit off his body, he replayed the image of him hitting Mary Jane in his head to force himself to keep going until the suit was off him completely. I love how Raimi uses the black suit to tackle adult themes like addiction in a way that kids or young adults could understand. Most notably stuff like lust, substance abuse, greed, pride, anger, etc. And have an arc dedicated to overcoming it and how it’s not easy. Just like with all unhealthy addictions it starts off feeling good and you think you have control of it but then eventually you lose yourself without realizing it and it affects every area of your life including the people you care about and you become an an entirely different person. Once you acknowledge you have a problem and need to change it’s not easy to break. I don’t think Raimi got enough credit for it back in the day but I’m glad a lot of people are realizing it now.

To this day I think Sandman was the best thing in the third movie. The actor really portrayed a very relatable Flint Marko to the point they literally copied it to the Spiderman 2 game. The symbiote in this movie really embodies anger, spite, vengeance, and violence. When Peter gets it, he wants to get revenge on Sandman for killing his uncle. But after the rest of the film happens and Peter realizes his mistake, he rejects the symbiote and makes himself better, and is even able to forgive Sandman for his mistake. Eddie, on the other hand, just points figures whenever he's at his lowest point. When Peter gets him fired, he wants revenge, and the symbiote lands on him, and he fully embraces that and never learns to forgive.

I absolutely love the attention to detail in the sound design. When the Symbiote has nearly consumed Eddie and the last few tendrils are attaching. I un-ironically love this scene. It’s my favorite interpretation of Peter getting rid of the suit. The visuals and sound design make it look like he’s trying to peel off a layer of skin with how well they’ve bonded. Then the fact he becomes more successful when the suit gets a taste of Eddy leaves you wondering if Peter succeeded, or if the symbiote gave up the fight. It’s so good for so many reasons. I think that was initially the plan. Sandman got the main role, with the black suit being a major plot point. This scene doesn’t get talked about enough. It is so atmospheric, the creepy church enhances the ominous feeling you get from Peter’s slow corruption by the symbiote. The score heightens the tension, and the sound of the church bells adds a whole new layer of gothic atmosphere. For me, It's the near-religious portrayal of the symbiote as a kind of "Sin". I'm not Christian, but I assume the symbiote acts as a symbol for "evil deeds", and that granting oneself redemption requires incredible strain and perseverance. Fun fact: In an interview, this is actually how the movie was going to end. In the original 3 script when Sony first asked for venom, Raimi was gonna do just the Black Suit storyline and Sandman as the only villain. When peter gets his suit off and Eddie changed into Venom, he wasn't going to be shown. The transformation would cut away in the final moments and the audience wouldn't see what he truly looked like, and Venom would escape and not be seen at all for the rest of the movie. And in 4 he was going to be brought back as the main villain. But Sony said "No, we want venom now".

It makes you wonder if Peter would have taken the suit off if the symbiote didn't give up, but he likely would have beaten it, considering he puts near minutes in Spiderman 2 in stopping the train. I'm not sure if the host keeps the abilities of the symbiote while taking it off and if a mere human gains super strength from Venom before it went to Parker as Eddie gains the abilities that Parker has, although the suit is very strong on its own, so if a mere human had the will to do so, the person could take it off maybe even without the bell.

Topher Grace was actually great casting when it comes to the themes and overarching characterization in the film. Brock/Venom is a foil/mirror to Peter/Spider-Man. Both are competing photographers, both have a “thing” for Gwen Stacy, and where Peter succeeds Brock fails. Where Peter is normally kind, humble, and awkward (outside of the Symbiote drama) Brock is arrogant, flamboyant, and a schmoozer, not to mention he plays dirty as seen when he fakes the Spidey pic. Granted, he isn’t as successful as he thinks he is and most of the shit he does comes off as well, awkward. But not endearing Peter awkward. Also, Peter with the Symbiote acts more like Brock with the flashiness and weird flirting. Now that’s why Topher Grace fits the bill. Brock’s ego is unearned. He’s a lesser man’s Parker. He also LOOKS like Tobey Maguire. The big blue eyes, slim built, and general awkwardness. Topher Grace could’ve just as easily played Peter Parker, given his other role in That 70s Show as Eric, the lovable, funny nerd who can’t seem to catch a break and who also happens to have the hots for the neighborhood redhead. Sound familiar? Spidey and Venom are mirrors. If the film wasn’t as over bloated and Venom/Brock had a separate film, I’m sure Topher Grace wouldn’t have gotten as much flack. He’s a good actor, the material could’ve been a bit better though, and I say this as someone who likes Spider-Man 3. Either way, it was really clever casting.

He is moving and screaming like he’s fighting for his life. 1:35 to the end is bafflingly good. This should have been the ending to Spider-Man 3, and S4 could have been 2 and a half hours of straight up Tobey vs Venom.

@@huangdynasty8536 There’s problems with it, like for instance I can’t stand Mary Jane’s character. And Peter kissing Gwen upside down was really out of nowhere and unnecessary. And they definitely didn’t give enough development time to Venom before him and Peter fought. But dude, there are so many moments in this movie that completely overshadow the bad parts. Black Suit vs Sandman, Black Suit vs Harry, this scene, Peter and Harry vs Sandman and Venom, the scene where Peter tells May he’s going to propose to MJ, etc. I don’t wanna type too much but yeah, this movie holds a special place in my heart lol

@@TylerG13 TBH, I’d argue that MJ was brilliant and Peter kissing Gwen made sense. Peter was so full of himself in the first act of the movie (hell he regains himself at the end of the 2nd act). He couldn’t even help MJ when she needed his comfort, lied to Harry, kissed Gwen (as you know), and was willing to kill Flint Marko (the symbiote is what basically kicked him off into gear). Then by the end of the movie after he realises how much of an arrogant runt he’s been, he tries owning up for his mistakes and finally becomes the Peter we all know. The whole reason Peter was evil with the symbiote was because it brought out the anger, vengeance, and darkness form within his heart that was slowly built up through the first half of the film and only reached its lowest point when Peter discovered Sandman killed his uncle instead of Dennis. But yeah, we can both agree that Venom could’ve used some more time in the oven.

i don't know if you guys noticed but the reason is that tobeys pether parker went "comando" was because the symbionte molecularly bonded to his suit before starting to influence him,mask included(he was holding his mas in one hand wile laying on the bed, the symbionte assimilated it and relocated its mass to Peter's head covering it and forming the mask) and influenced him to climb that building while asleep, it literally became a suit to be closer to its host skin and start the bonding process that's why Peter literally had to tear the symbionte off, it would not allow itself to be removed willingly any more that's why his red and blue suit does not exist anymore under the symbionte,but Lucky he had spare uniforms hidden through out the city so he did not go home "comando" Lukly
