Australia Pre Eddie (in chronological order) all away from home Beat Scotland by 1 point, lose to France by 1 point, lose to Italy by 1 point, lose to Ireland by 3 points, beat Wales by 5 points Eddie Jones comes in - Lose to SA 43-12, lose to Argentina 34-31, Lose to NZ 38-7 , lose again to NZ 23-20, lose to France, 41-17 in that order before the RWC - Selects 1 debutant flyhalf in the entire rwc squad who was the flyhalf from a team that came 9th/12 in a pathetic super rugby competition - Leaves Quade Cooper, Foley, Pete Samu among others out after 3 years of building towards the rwc and they have to find out via the team announcement on social media - Spend months attacking Rugby League in the media to the point they RL starts discussing introducing Cap space exemptions for Union players to join League teams (sorry NZ) - Spends months telling everyone we're going to win the world cup, has his face plastered on all ads, bus stops, everywhere (no players were the ads it was just Eddie jones) - Takes a meeting with Japan 3 weeks before the RWC and then proceeds to lie about it for months - Comes out again repeating Australia will win the world cup and that he would hate to be the opposition - Has an media interview where proclaims he wont leave - Lose to Fiji and an average Wales team 40-6!!! - Don't make it out of an easy pool - Comes out that he did in fact meet with Japan and that he lied. Spend the next few weeks blaming everyone else - Leaves.

Please stop that BS narrative. Eddie's contribution was so inconsequential to the Boks 2007 win that he may as well not have been there. Even Jake White was just a small part of that success. That was John Smit's team, backed up by Mattfield and other senior players. They showed that comprehensively when they went through the next 4 years with better stats even though the new coach was the clown Pieter De Villiers.

As a long time close watching WB fan I say Eddie's biggest error for RWC was the appalling squad he selected. There were 11 players in his squad who clearly did not deserve selection. These were Nonggorr, Fa’amausili, Uelese, Gleeson, T Hooper, Kemeny, Arnold, Leota, Fines-Leleiwasa, Petaia and Vunivalu. Eddie never spent enough time in 2023 looking hard at these duds. I'd been watching them for years. He then left home the real worthies like Lonergan, Ikitau, Lolesio, M Hooper, Toole, Brown and Neville. Eddie said he was selecting youth but that was wrong. Most of the players he left home were younger and better. Eddie then did not select a single Test standard goal kicker. Donaldson, Gordon and White were all 2nd string goal kickers for their provinces. Lonergan should have been selected for his goal kicking alone plus..... he was younger and much better than Fines-Leleiwasa anyway. Eddie's squad had NO logic to it. As soon as I saw his squad I knew WBs would not progress from their pool.

Why, what has he ever achieved to be considered "good" even ... never mind "legend" status? His claim to fame is playing a small-bit mostly inconsequential part in the 2007 RWC winning Bok team, and then a single RWC match win as the Japanese coach against a Bok side who never turned up for the match and were caught out on the day. Since then he's messed up England and got fired for it, then messed up Australia and got them knocked out of the last RWC in the pool states.

I understand that Eddie Jones said there had to be a change and he was tasked by the ARU to just this. However if a coach has much experience as he has, surely, surely he must have known that his world cup strategy was doomed. Taking young, untested players to perform at the highest level in any sport is the worse than gambling - just plain stupidity. The result is the Wallaby fans are offside and some of the players are offside - Australian rugby the big loser. Sorry Eddie, you should have known better.

I suspect Eddie Jones' recent performance as Wallaby coach was symptomatic of the issues that have cursed senior management in the ARU for the last decade and appointing Eddie was a desperate attempt to paper over long term problems in Australian Rugby. He was a name coach but he wanted to revamp the Wallabies and the ARU did not and the outcome not surprisingly was therefore catastrophic.
