McGuire has made his point that to him and many others this is no longer a sport, it’s a commercial juggernaut where ratings, commercial interests and money are simply more important than anything else. Apparently no one is allowed to question that ethos. Business will ultimately consume anything it wants to use to further its interests. Ultimately, the sport becomes top heavy with little focus on the grassroots. This is what’s happened to rugby. Fine if that’s what you want but to many of us it a great pity.

I think AFL has dropped the ball (pardon the pun) on attracting young people to the game and with engaging with the community properly. My three nephews (2 x14 6, both 6'3" and 1 x 15yo 6'5), recently left their footy teams to play basketball and are loving it.

It's happening in a. Parents prefer to watch their kids down at the local gym for an hour and a half on a Saturday morning, rather than sit under a tree for 4-5 hours on a Saturday morning. It's a lot warmer and quicker to watch kids basketball on the weekends rather than standing in the rain for 2.5 hours on a Saturday afternoon!

And not to mention as well as the above basketball is a great sport, played around the world, need lots of stamina, skill, dexterity and more chance to get hand on the ball/ influence the game without having to deal with concussions etc. (although ankles and knees have a high chance of getting hammered)

The game died from 1995. Such a sanitised soft unskilled game now. All the players are is endurance runners who try to pick up footy skills along the way. Born and bred VFL/SANFL and it lost me years ago to NRL.

Typical old head lmao. Players today would sexually assault players from the 1990s apart from a very select few like Hird, Carey Ablett snr ect. The game now is so much more skillful and fast it's not even funny. It's just not as hard hitting. The 2000s and early 2010s had it best.

You are almost right. 1996 was an amazing season. Maybe the last great season. AFL was still great up until say 2004. Because in the late 90s you still had powerhouse forwards like ablett, lockett, dunstall, modra, carey, llyod playing. 2004 was the last great grand final. Its been downhill ever since. No full forwards or centre half forwards that kick goals and take huge marks. No one plays their position basically everyone plays like a ruck rover, too soft and boring, too much politics. The last few years have been horrible. I still dont know how so many people still go to games or watch it on tv
