It’s because they’re such good friends, that’s one main reason why. Since Arsenio knows Eddie so well and they’ve already worked together by this stage, that contributes alot to Arsenio already being comfortable around him and to ask him some of those challenging questions.

Then interestingly enough, a few months after this interview he stars in the movie called ‘Distinguished Gentleman’ which is pretty much exposing the inner workings of government officials in a comedic way. It’s funny that now that movie is hard to find anywhere.

My mom always loved Arsenio Hall. Growing up when this talk show was on mom watched every night. She’s in her 70’s now and when she sees him on TV she can’t believe he hasn’t changed at all. She still loves him.

In my opinion, Arsenio was trying to use the politics section to encourage people (especially Black people) to go out &vote. But I don't think Eddie knew it was coming.

Yeah. Back then the 'Rock The Vote' campaign was in full swing trying to get young people to vote. There was a lot of promotion for it on MTV and shows like Arsenio that appealed to younger audiences. I always liked Eddie's "Smallest feet" analogy though. We really don't have a choice. George Carlin talked about it for years. As have many others. We have the "Illusion of choice."

Yeah it got a bit tense but they handled it well. Arsenio probably had some words for Eddie after this though lol but overall this was a great interview and the dynamic between these two is incredible. A true brotherhood. I do feel Eddie could’ve been a bit more supportive of his homie by going along with some of the questions in order to support the Arsenio brand but hey.

Amazing how I can't watch full episodes of this talk show anywhere online or on any streaming service. Especially considering how groundbreaking it was. I mean at one point this show was one of the epicenters of not just black culture but pop culture. Everyone wanted to be on here to the point that you even had celebrities either in the crowd or backstage not even scheduled to appear but just hanging out. The 90s really is the greatest decade!

A lot of movies flopped and became cult classics. Some movies were panned by critics and went on to become classics. The Wizard of Oz was trashed by critics. The Distinguished Gentlemen is very underrated, so is Vampire in Brooklyn

This is amazing! I love Eddie Murphy. Thank you so much for this! I remember reading an old article (dated around 1999) that spoke of Eddie and Arsenio no longer being friends bc of this ep. Apparently, Eddie was uncomfortable speaking about politics but Arsenio continued to ask him questions about the subject. I believe they didn't appear together until Eddie guested on Arsenio's new talk show. idk how much of this was true. idk how much of that is true. Eddie and Arsenio were nearly inseparable in the late 80s and early 90s but idk if they appeared in anything together for nearly 2 decades but this could also just be Hollywood gossip.

As far as the politics subject goes Eddie handled himself very well. He didn't seem flustered and explained his point very well. Kudos to Arsenio to ask him a question like that.
