That Phillip is pretty arrogant for a new kid in school. Eddie was being genuinely friendly and nice, and then he (Phillip) starts to act all arrogant and insults Eddie. Kids like that will have no friends in school.

This happened to me one time, the teacher sticks me with a new transferred Vietnamese kid who couldn't speak English. the principle was expecting me to be his translator, but i was Chinese. One day my classmates ask if i know any Vietnamese, so i said " doa hang" (learnt it from a Vietnamese war documentary) which means surrender. before I could explain what it means, they were already yelling " doa hang doa hang" at the kid. that was the last day i saw that Vietnamese kid.

A similar thing happened to me except the transfer student was Korean. The teacher asked every one of us Asian kids whether we could speak Korean and to welcome him to the group. (Our school had a division between the Asian students, each group representing the country where we or our ancestors came from. The Japanese group never really got along with the other groups except for me) Luckily one of my friends could speak Korean and he taught us how to say hi in Korean.

I remember my teacher did the same thing with me. In the 5th grade, She pair me up with another Chinese girl in class because we were both Chinese. She thought it would make us best friends. But it ended up with both of us hating each other. She didn’t like my short hair and I didn’t like her stuck up attitude. It just goes to show that just because someone is the same race as you, it doesn’t mean they’ll instantly like you or be your best friend

Well to be fair tribalism is basic human nature. We often tends to associate with people whom we share a common language, ethnicity or culture. I experienced it first hand during my first job when one of co-owner of the company became quite attentive and friendly towards me when he discovered that we both hail from the same state. He was quite happy to find someone whom he can chat with his mother tongue. This helped me greatly in my beginning of my career.
