I prefer VH with Sammy more. I think he was the superior musician, songwriter, and vocalist. I think VH was able to spread its wings and Ed was free to give us more music from inside of him. Which he should’ve been able to because it was his band. That aside, even though I prefer VH with Sammy and don’t like Dave’s personality, I don’t hate him and I think the band made incredible music with him singing. Every album was incredible. Dave fans will say every Sammy song sucked. Like I said, it’s irrational. Anyway, the only way Ed got as much keyboard onto 1984 was the creation of 5150 (the studio). Dave wasn’t able to push out as much of what he didn’t approve of. It’s a shame because look how good (and successful) “Jump” and “I’ll Wait” was. People even loved the keyboard into to the album. What’s weird to me, too, is when Dave left and made that EP (after 1984) he had keyboard songs on it. He chose songs that called for it. And the subsequent bands that he created used keyboards in it. I know that there was far more to his leaving than complaining about Keyboards though. The changing of singers over the years is (I believe), that besides Ed’s addiction, there was something in his personality that made friendships sour after a while. He was a flawed human being. Who isn’t, in one way or another? But he would get prickly after some time. He also envisioned the band having different singers each album or so, like Jeff Beck. Good thing they didn’t do that because it’s not as a winning formula, commercially speaking. Musically, it might’ve been amazing, but people prefer intact bands. Bottom line, they made awesome music over their entire existence and we, as fans, should appreciate what we like and not spend the energy hating what we don’t prefer. Nowadays, with the ability to do so, the people that don’t like Sammy can listen to the music they like without the vocals. They could find, or create themselves, the songs with the vocals removed. They can enjoy the instrumentals. That way they can enjoy more VH without hearing the vocalist they hate so much. It’s a shame though, VH really made magic with “5150” and “OU812”, I think. I believe that was VH’s prime and the best Ed and Sammy ever made. The rest were great, but those first to records with Sammy were on another level. That’s my opinion, anyway. Ed was able to explore his keyboards with another guitarist there to play it live. It’s a shame they used backing tracks later. Something Al mocked other bands for back in 1986. Well, if you’re still reading, thanks for reading my book. I’m long-winded on the topic. They’re my favorite band ever. With Sam and Dave.

So....if your music didn't match his "vision" then you sucked but if you tried to sound like him you sucked. The world doesn't need people like him no matter how gifted a musician he was. BTW nowhere in this video does anybody refer to EVH as a piece of shit so one more click-bait thumbnail I can add to the never ending list.

The band chemistry is what made them famous. Sure, Roth was an outstanding showman but he was an average singer. However, when I listen to the old music Roth's way of expressing the lyrics and his outrageous personality was key for the band. Both Michael Anthony and Alex were an outstanding rhythm section! Any musician knows that the rhythm section is the KEY for any band to be good! A team effort and all the other players down the road did not provide the chemistry that the original band had!

Saying Dave was a singer might be giving him too much credit. Talented lyricist, charismatic front man, but not much of a singer, especially in concert.

I’m sure this comment has been typed many times on this video. DLR told them to name the band Van Halen I think that’s pretty great that a frontman like DLR to convince the band to name the band after the two brothers. 🤷🏽♂️

Lol, to each their own but as far as I know their are no lies here. Also when they were on top, yeah Eddie was supposed to be a great guy as long as you did things his way. Towards the latter part, they got rid of a great bassit, why? Just so Eddie could have his son play with Van Halen? Okay cool but do it the right way, don't cut off the Guy who got you to where you are, just be honest, work it out, and have your son join.

@Johnwick-ed7vo No lies ? .....Hmmm . Well, 'economy with the actualite' possibly Johnathan....Ed was a great guy to strangers & friends & fellow musicians. Ask people like Steve Lukather , Jas Obrecht, Steve Rosen,...Also before he built 5150 people like Roth & VH manager Noel Monk had large control over the band so Ed didn't have the option back then of doing things 'his way' as you put it.....He WAS a great guy even when there was no 'quid quo pro' in it. Liking getting Allan Holdsworth signed to Warners, Giving to charities & doing stuff for the Opus foundation.,,Helping Jason Becker.......With Wolfgang replacing Mike,,,well,,, that could have been handled more diplomatically. He shouldn't have said what he said. But taken all in all he was a good person even if obliterating fear of that cancer with alcohol made him go off the rails a bit (Paul)

@@walterevans2118 Ask Valerie Bertinelli how great he was when he was off f--king other women. She was a great wife and the greatest betrayal that a man could do is screw other women behind their wife's back. But that isn't all who he screwed behind their backs. The way that he treated Michael Anthony was untenable. Mike is a really great guy - and what a voice!. Then the way he showed up at the Limp Biscuit guy's house with a gun. Eddie is the one responsible for getting hos OWN damn equipment out of the house. He took it there and he left it there. It wasn't the guy's responsibility to be Eddie's caddie. So, Eddie - go get your gear. Don't show up threatening to kill somebody when you are the one responsible for leaving it at his house. What a complete Narcissistic Asshole!

@@fuzzybutkus8970 If Ed had problems later on I believe it was because he needed to drink more than ever because he needed alcohol to blot out his fear of that cancer. We have to see the negative things he said in that context and have compassion for him, not self righteous judgement .

Eddie is rated the 3rd best guitarist out of 100 of the best iconic guitarists in the world. Look it up. The 1st, and 2nd don't even compare to Eddie's style and his playing. I saw Van Halen lots of times with both singers in the 80s and 90s. Van Halen Forever❤
