I love Randy. In spite of getting disparaging comments from Eddie, he never said anything back and remained respectful and never allowed his personal peace be affected by it. He didn’t sink to that level. He was totally the bigger person.

I remember when Michael Anthony was fired he put out a statement that instead of going out with Van Halen he would be going out with Sammy Hagar and that the reason was that Van Halen went out without inviting him Then MA said Wolfgang was a really good kid who was good at his instrument and that everybody should give him a chance A class act that might have been out of place with these people.

I'm sure he put up with a lot more crap then he'll ever say. but to cut him in pay and then publicly say, instead of privately, that he had lost a step or whatever was downright meanspirited. Glad Eddie straightened up before he died but I do think he waited too long.

MA is a good guy and was treated very very well. He got 25% songwriting credit on several albums. They were a band who for a long time split everything 4 ways. I'm sure Michael appreciated it. And he was right about Wolfgang who is simply vastly more talented possibly even more-so than Eddie.

The Management wanted to get all they could while a band was hot. Jon Lord Deep Purple's Keyboardist said after Machine Head and Made In Japan the played 320 shows in one year. Jon said human here. It’s well known that Eddie was a complete prick. The way he talked about Randy shows how fragile his ego was. He said Randy learned everything from him, which if you know anything about music is a ridiculous statement. They were completely different types of players. They both changed music forever, they both had unique styles of their own and both were the best at that time. As a professional guitarist, I think Randy was an all around better player. I think Eddie knew that and couldn’t stand all the Attention Randy was getting. So he put him down every chance he could. @@willieboy8798 It was an odd thing. People that love Dave seem to have an irrational hatred of Sammy. It’s like they take it personally if somebody say they prefer or even a little bit like Sammy. I prefer VH with Sammy more. I think he was the superior musician, songwriter, and vocalist. I think VH was able to spread its wings and Ed was free to give us more music from inside of him. Which he should’ve been able to because it was his band. That aside, even though I prefer VH with Sammy and don’t like Dave’s personality, I don’t hate him and I think the band made incredible music with him singing. Every album was incredible. Dave fans will say every Sammy song sucked. Like I said, it’s irrational. Anyway, the only way Ed got as much keyboard onto 1984 was the creation of 5150 (the studio). Dave wasn’t able to push out as much of what he didn’t approve of. It’s a shame because look how good (and successful) “Jump” and “I’ll Wait” was. People even loved the keyboard into to the album. What’s weird to me, too, is when Dave left and made that EP (after 1984) he had keyboard songs on it. He chose songs that called for it. And the subsequent bands that he created used keyboards in it. I know that there was far more to his leaving than complaining about Keyboards though. The changing of singers over the years is (I believe), that besides Ed’s addiction, there was something in his personality that made friendships sour after a while. He was a flawed human being. Who isn’t, in one way or another? But he would get prickly after some time. He also envisioned the band having different singers each album or so, like Jeff Beck. Good thing they didn’t do that because it’s not as a winning formula, commercially speaking. Musically, it might’ve been amazing, but people prefer intact bands. Bottom line, they made awesome music over their entire existence and we, as fans, should appreciate what we like and not spend the energy hating what we don’t prefer. Nowadays, with the ability to do so, the people that don’t like Sammy can listen to the music they like without the vocals. They could find, or create themselves, the songs with the vocals removed. They can enjoy the instrumentals. That way they can enjoy more VH without hearing the vocalist they hate so much. It’s a shame though, VH really made magic with “5150” and “OU812”, I think. I believe that was VH’s prime and the best Ed and Sammy ever made. The rest were great, but those first to records with Sammy were on another level. That’s my opinion, anyway. Ed was able to explore his keyboards with another guitarist there to play it live. It’s a shame they used backing tracks later. Something Al mocked other bands for back in 1986. Well, if you’re still reading, thanks for reading my book. I’m long-winded on the topic. They’re my favorite band ever. With Sam and Dave.

As far as I'm concerned, Alex Lifeson is 10X the guitarist of Eddie Va Halen. He used far more guitar voicings in his music as opposed to EVHs tone and playing style. Same goes for Randy Rhodes- far, far better than EVH.

@@rogerdodger6025 Ha! Uh, it was Allan Holdsworth he said, not Alex Lifeson! Come on now. Enough propaganda. Randy Rhoads was great and had his own style, but didn't change guitar playing like Eddie, or hendrix, or Holdsworth. I love Rush too, but as for Alex's guitar playing, it def doesn't have more voicings, maybe he layers more tracks, but to suggest that he uses more chord voicings is comical.

Seriously now, I love Rush too, and I can play all of the Rush tunes, up to 1981, when I started tuning them out, as well as I can play every Van Halen tune from 78 to 1984. So, as for Alex's guitar playing, I wouldn't say that it has more voicings as the fact that he plays lots of 9ths and 11th bar chords and maybe he layers more tracks, but to suggest that he uses more chord voicings and or he is more sophisticated is really comical to me. Alex Lifeson's solos are usually pretty pedestrian although some stand out and truly shine and he def has soul in his playing. He's just not groundbreaking or earth changing to the world of guitar, by any means. I mean Jimmy Page is more impressive. I love them both dearly. But to say Alex Lifeson is 10x the player, or better in any fucking way, is truly absurd. So absurd that I just had to comment here.

What EVH and AVH did to Michael Anthony is right up there with what Coverdale did to Sykes. In my book, worse, because of the history, contribution, & longtime success VH had. Anthony was family. EVH went to his grave without ever apologizing or trying to reconcile with Anthony. Think about that. What did Anthony ever do to EVH? Nothing, except give him a lifetime of loyalty and hard work.

The band chemistry is what made them famous. Sure, Roth was an outstanding showman but he was an average singer. However, when I listen to the old music Roth's way of expressing the lyrics and his outrageous personality was key for the band. Both Michael Anthony and Alex were an outstanding rhythm section! Any musician knows that the rhythm section is the KEY for any band to be good! A team effort and all the other players down the road did not provide the chemistry that the original band had!

Ask people like Steve Lukather , Jas Obrecht, Steve Rosen,...Also before he built 5150 people like Roth & VH manager Noel Monk had large control over the band so Ed didn't have the option back then of doing things 'his way' as you put it.....He WAS a great guy even when there was no 'quid quo pro' in it. Liking getting Allan Holdsworth signed to Warners, Giving to charities & doing stuff for the Opus foundation.,,Helping Jason Becker.......With Wolfgang replacing Mike,,,well,,, that could have been handled more diplomatically. He shouldn't have said what he said. But taken all in all he was a good person even if obliterating fear of that cancer with alcohol made him go off the rails a bit (Paul)
