Great story by Eddie Vedder. I sat across the first-class aisle from EVH and a very young Wolfie on a flight from Salt Lake City to LA in the mid 90s, probably ‘96. This was when Valerie Bertinelli starred in Touched by an Angel, which was filmed in Utah, and the boys were heading back home after spending the weekend with her or something. I said hi to him and told him how cool it was to meet him, said a few words to Wolfie, but otherwise left them alone. My thoughts at the time, observing my number one rock icon at that stage in life....as he ordered an orange juice with no vodka, called his wife from the plane just to check in (this was that brief period when the planes had those built-in phones), and spent most of the flight begging Wolfie (in the gentlest of ways) to stay in his seat. I was a young father watching just another guy trying to be a good father. I couldn’t bring myself to ask for an autograph and I’m good with that. RIP Eddie...you raised a fine son and were a great dad.

So I was an audio stagehand in Vegas for 20 years and a friend of mine who was a valet parker at the old Desert Inn Hotel that I used to record demo tapes for calls me one afternoon and says “I just parked Sammy Hagar’s Red Lambo, and Eddie is just sitting at a blackjack table with his manager playing 21.” They were in town for a Mike Tyson fight. So what does my guitar player, EVH disciple ass do? I shoot right down there, it was only about 15 minutes from my house. I grab a demo tape and a sharpie and jet! I park and enter the pit, and there he is, at a $50 minimum bet table. I rush to the nearest ATM, I had maybe $300-$400 in my account. Okay, if I lose every hand, I can sit next to Ed and try and not be star struck (I was completely unphased by celebrity at that point in my life from working with celebs for years as a stagehand in the worlds largest showrooms and arenas.) I sit right next to him and proceed to act surprised, and said “Eddie, hey, I’m Steve, I’m a huge fan.” His mgr looks at him like “you want me to get rid of this guy and Ed flashes that million dollar smile and shakes it off. As Eddy Vedder said, he could have been the biggest diva in the world, and I would have been okay with it. So what was he like? The warmest, kindest gentle, soul you’d ever possibly expect. We talked guitars and amps for 45 minutes or so like we were old high school buddies until I ran out of money. He signed an autograph saying “Get Crazy Steve-EVH.” Not only that, but he took my demo tape and gave it to his mgr and said “we’ll give it a listen.” On top of that, after floating on a cloud and finding my buddy out front in Valet, I run into him again about 45 minutes later, and like a star struck teen anger ask for a second autograph- he graciously obliges with that impish grin... they’re hanging in my studio to this day, it must have been ‘93 or so if Tyson was still the champ, and Sammy was the lead singer at that point. -time of yer life kid. He was the coolest, most down to earth Rock God I ever met, and I met hundreds. Miss that guy more everyday....

A few years back this young guy, the nephew of a friend, was working at a hotel in the NYC area. One of the guests at such hotel was Vedder, and my friend's nephew very respectfully approached him as Vedder went to his morning workout at the gym. The kid asked him what he would recommend for him to do as an aspiring musician to be successful. Vedder asked him for his name and said he'd get back to him later, gym time apparently being precious to a guy like him. Next day, after Vedder had checked out, the kid found in his mailbox a package with a hand written letter from Vedder giving him suggestions like a mentor would, and including a small portable audio recorder to record ideas as they materialize, something it seems he uses himself. I'm not the world's biggest Vedder fan, but this story really drove home the idea that he might be an alright guy if given the chance.

Like Prince, EVH was a once in a lifetime Genius that we won’t see again in our lifetimes. We were lucky to experience both their talents and gifts for as long as we did. So it really hurts that they have left us now and there’s silence where there was live music before. If you saw either one of them live you were lucky. Now they will live on through their Art. RIP EVH and Prince- Never to be Forgotten

Eddies death hit me like a ton of bricks, I grew up listening to VH, Way back in 78, His death made me realize I dont have much time left on this planet, I started to rethink things, I would once say Ohh I have time, The fuck I do, Im 50ty, Live a hard lifestyle, Like most I worked my ass off, prepared for retirement A retirement I probably wont see, The time to live is now, RIGHT NOW,,, To the young, Dont fall into that trap of I have plenty of time, 10 20 or even 30 years pass fast
