Even though I am an American, and have love this sport since the age of 13 and have done Road roadracing, touring and did the kilo on the Encino velodrome, I will easily admit that Eddy merckx is the greatest road racing cyclist of all time, and there is no close second! I remember working at a Pro Bike Shop in the early 70s in the LA area and I believe it was during one of the world championships, that another top rated road racer said something like this.. " Eddie passed me like he was on a motorbike". I suppose you could say that he is the only good cannibal that ever lived LOL. And, if that's not enough, what a great head of hair!

I like how the guys 40 or 50 years ago had bigger gears and less of them. Just hammering away. On steel frames, too. It's true that bicycle technology has come a long way and it's much lighter and more advanced. But the old way is the picture in my head when I think of "cycling". I've done all my riding on a steel framed Raleigh or a Schwinn with a tall fixed gear. I don't feel as confident with aluminum wheels and chainrings on public roads in remote places and thre terrain where I live is dead flat. I imagine these old timers racing Le Tour on France's beat up postwar roads back in the early days carrying tubes on their shoulders. They were definitely strong riders and really dedicated to their sport. They rode their way up to better equipment through many hard miles by winning on what they had. Kind of like auto racing in the 50s and 60s. It had that raw, frontier feel to it.
