@JoeEdelmann You guys did an amazing job covering this amazing song! I love the way Joe Edelmann delivered his vocals and you guys nailed the bass for this song! If you guys don’t mind me asking this question, what is Ed O’Brien doing in the song during the outro? I watched the From the Basement performance and I think I know what he’s doing during the intro of the song and the middle of the song. However, the outro kind of confuses me. I’ve been studying what Jonny, Colin, Philip, and Thom have been doing in this song but Ed’s part is a little bit more of an enigma. If you could help that would mean alot, but if not I totally get it. Hats off to you guys ❤
@JoeEdelmann3 Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! ☺️ he is looping his sustainer guitar to make a “wall of sound” of various notes in the scale, to loosely replicate the sound of the violins on the album!
@kanem1820 Жыл бұрын
@@JoeEdelmann3 Is he playing notes in the C Major Scale? I’m hearing a high C and a high D note being played. Also, the violins on the album version are so epic! I’m going to assume Jonny Greenwood wrote that section for the song. Jonny Greenwood is an excellent composer!
@JoeEdelmann3 Жыл бұрын
@@kanem1820 it’s the C Lydian scale (aka G Major)! So C D E F# G A B. Yeah, I’m pretty sure the idea for overlapping whole-tone string clusters to create that dissonance was Jonny’s ☺️
@kanem1820 Жыл бұрын
@@JoeEdelmann3 I just have one more question. What is Ed O’Brien’s guitar tuned to? Is it standard tuning or is it some very intricate tuning?
@JoeEdelmann3 Жыл бұрын
@@kanem1820 I believe just standard tuning! In the from the basement performance he used his Fernandes Native Pro sustainer guitar. At least as of the later 2012 tour, he strung only the bottom 3 strings with extra heavy strings down an octave and possibly in unison (per the King of Gear).

@phaustho2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Joe, I have a question after listening to this cover. There's a track in this song that I love more than anything ever released by Radiohead: it's... I don't know, not sure if it's a distorted guitar or strings or a synth (although I feel like it could be a brass section?). It pops up on top of the mix after the crash hits hard, when the epic part kicks in after the piano. It's like a sustained note (you played that part on the keyboard, if I'm not mistaken), but on the original recording, it gets cranky, loud... as the volume goes up, it even shrieks. I don't know what that is, or how they made it, but it's my favourite sound in any Radiohead song. Do you know which track I'm talking about? Any idea on what that actually is? It fades in right after the 3:00 mark on the studio version I'm particularly interested in your insights about it, being the impressive Radiohead connoisseur that you are :D
@JoeEdelmann32 жыл бұрын
I hear what you’re saying! A lot of the noise clusters in that section are from the strings playing notes very close together and adding some trilling, but I do hear like a ringing feedback, maybe they added a synth or something with Ed’s sustainer there?

Great job guys. It's really nice hearing the synth tone after you covered it on the rh synth sounds tutorial. I'm also wondering, is the fella playing the guitar/xylo using an EOB strat? I've seen a few of these amd its seems like he is, so I'm also wondering what other pedals and effects he is using to get that amazing tone in the into of the song :)
@JoeEdelmann35 жыл бұрын
Benji Sprecher indeed he is! Cory was using just a bit of overdrive and delay to thicken up the volume swells. He also makes a few loops using the sustainer to layer in at the end of the song.
