The fence gag is one of my favorite running gags in any of Wrights movies and/or the Cornetto trilogy. It's funny but if you've seen Shaun of the Dead where he fails and then Hot Fuzz where he totally nails it and Danny flubs it, when you see the fence in Worlds End you know the joke is coming and the minute he hits the fence the joke is that he's in on it too with the half-fourth wall break of 'ohh nooooo'

That very brief shot sold the movie to me, big time. According to the actor Rafe Spall, the one who plays the detective on the background, his detective partner on the foreground played by Paddy Consadine actually improvised sliding back to the camera shot. Edgar Wright only told them to do something quick and witty while that camera frame stays still and rolling. Rafe was laughing off-camera after he was out of the frame due to what Paddy did, quickly sliding back in and out. Man, it still hits me hard in my funny bone.

I will never understand how so many people hate on The World's End (relative to the other two Cornetto films). Maybe it's not as much of a comedy film as SotD/HF, but in terms of raw film making _quality_, it's just fucking amazing. The cinematography, choreography (particularly in its action/fight scenes), set and costume design, colours and atmosphere, MUSIC, the emotion and storytelling. It's not a constant barrage of jokes, but it's easily The World's End that I get the most drawn into as a viewer.
@tylergibson76528 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately all that yummy visual goodness isn't enough to make an enjoyable movie. None of the characters were likable.
@DispleasedEskimo8 жыл бұрын
Personally I disagree about the characters not being likeable. I tried to endweight my list of yummies with "emotion and storytelling", but I think its had the opposite effect and made it seem like an after-thought. I cared a _lot_ for the main group of friends, particularly Gary and Andy. The film really delves into the history of the group, and also devotes a lot of time to building on each individual as the story progresses. Conversely Shaun of the Dead had characters like, I can't remember her name but it's that actress who played Dawn in The Office. Did she add much? And characters like Shaun's mum result in emotional moments but it's just because it's his mum really; I didn't care that much about her on her own merits, it's just really funny how she's oblivious to the zombie threat. Similarly Hot Fuzz has a tonne of lovable funny characters but it's more about the humour, whereas World's End is getting me invested in their _lives_ more. Just different tastes, I think. (Feels so stupid, me criticising SotD when I love all the Wright films so much. They make most other films look like garbage. I'm just trying to say World's End really puts the work in so far as the character's backstories/personalities go, and there's certainly no shortage of emotional moments between them.)

I think another major factor is that Edgar Wright movies aren’t strictly comedies, they’re usually also action/horror/genre movies too. Edgar discussed this in a video for Vanity Fair. He shot the second zombie walk on the first day of filming, because he wanted to send a message to the cast and crew that this is what they can expect. He was also peeved when a crew member (maybe the director of photography?) said this sequence will be cut. His reply? Lard in as many in-jokes as he could. And the "slipping on the blood"? An improv by Simon. If you watch that spot, you won't see any blood there to slip on.

I think for good visual, cinematic comedy in America, you really have to turn to television. Key & Peele, for example, is very well directed and understands every aspect of filming comedy, with great cinematography and editing, they realise it is much more than just the dialogue that provides the laughs.

harry lindsey Sorry but i personally think key & peele are overdone. The first 2 series were pretty good with good skits, while the last series are mostly skits 3-5 minutes long. The whole 3-5 minutes they try to build a pointe, but yet at the end mostly it gets boring and the pointe lost its joke/charme. Also Peele is a way better actor then key which is visible in facial expressions and gestures. The only thing key is able to do is changing his voice to a girly like high pitched scream that gets annoying after the seconds skit. Think of meegan, slapass, make-a-wish, consequences, boxing-press-conference

Edgar Wright's approach toward creating a film that shows you so much in the most mundane objects. The cinematography is so fresh, the way that shots blend together using new camera angles, the storytelling being so easy to understand through the visuals and the writing of dialogue and actions are so fun to watch. This was probably why I enjoyed watching Shawn of The dead when I was younger, it spoke to me as I love things being told through actions rather than words. Edgar Wright is a seriously underrated filmmaker who deserves way more recognisation.

Better visual filmmaking also makes movies way more accessible, especially in countries with a lot of immigrants like the US & UK. Not only are a lot of jokes in modern comedies just bad, but they're pretty nuanced and you have to be quick-thinking, understand cultural references, and be a really good English speaker in order to get the joke when the director wants you too. I think this is why my parents (immigrants) LOVE the Edgar Wright movies with Simon Pegg. It makes me sad when we're watching a movie and the dialogue (especially jokes) is too confusing and my parents can't understand it, and they can't fully enjoy the movie. And they've been speaking English for 20 years! Better visual filmmaking also makes movies more likeable to watchers from other countries. Aspiring filmmakers, please consider this!

This is an example of a filmmaker with clear, own personal filmmaking style as opposed to conventional Hollywood continuity. It would be interesting to see how Wright could carry that into a wholly different genre. How would it play? Most probably it wouldn't be as effective as style and content can't be boxed into a set of parameters. Also I believe, Wright has been doing this since the beginning of his career which was mostly comedy. And a lot of his influences come from exploitation films, which can easily be spotted in his style, as well as of someone like Tarantino.

I think the reason why a lot of American comedies do not use visual comedy like Edgar Wright is that a lot of the comedy actors/ writers come from skit comedy, like a majority of working comedic actors right now are from SNL, currently or formly. Like how Tony pointed out most comedy movies are just lightly edited skits. That's not to say their bad. It's just that when they jump from SNL to professional movie making, they do not adapt to the rules of movie making. They just use what's always worked for them.

@BollocksUtwat10 жыл бұрын
Basically they're not bad but they're failing to achieve to a degree that takes advantage of the medium they're moving into. Whats more I don't think SNL has been properly funny for a long time. It used to be way more dynamic and back in the Belushi days you'd have way more physical comedy in it than now. Think of Belushi's Samurai, waving that sword around. Lets look also the Blues Brothers movie, a comedy film that does NOT fail to take advantage of the possibilities of cinema. So I think this generation of skit comedy films are in fact not just an indictment of the failure to take advantage of the qualities of visual film but also an indictment of how far skit comedy on American TV has fallen from its hey day in the 70s and early 80s. I honestly don't think Will Farrell is nearly as funny as most of the original SNL cast. The legacy of those originals comes in dozens of films, from Aykroyd, Belushi, Murray, as well as with the Canadian counterpart of SCTV and its best figure John Candy. Classic films of those personalities such as the Blue Brothers, Uncle Buck, Ghostbusters, and those other great Hughs movies like Home Alone. My subjective opinion is that modern North American sketch comedy is pretty lame compared to the 70s and 80s.
@JonahLoeb10 жыл бұрын
I mean, Simon Pegg was in the sketch group Big Train. Nick Frost was in Man Stroke Woman. Both of them also worked for at least a short time as stand-up comics, just like lots of the actors in contemporary American big-budget comedies. I don't think you're giving those actors enough credit! If you write good material for them and direct them well, they can do amazing things.

tbh, it's not the same thing if it's the theme of the movie, than if the movie is just edited in that way in baby driver, music and action (mostly driving) are key elements, so not synching them up would've just been bad cinematography nothing against baby driver, just saying it doesn't have the same happy surprise (aka "WOW") effect with that particular effect also, baby driver is more a well-shot action movie than a comedy movie to me, so it wouldn't have fit here anyway ^^

How did you talk about things leaving the frame in funny ways without showing Scott Pilgrim diving out the window?

Hot Fuzz might be - along with the first Matrix - the movie with the best camera + cutting I've ever seen. Every shot, every transition is a masterpiece. And so are the sound effects.

6:38 "#6: Action syncronized to the music" Edgar took that one and elevated to the hightest level at Baby Driver

I have a feeling that when you learn how great filmmakers do things, you get a very low tolerance for terrible directing. In a way you are removing your ability to enjoy mediocre movies.

Yup,

+Michael Nielsen (ToneSlaveMusic) You're right, between Tony and Evan from The Nerdwriter I'm starting to notice that low tolerance... the other side of the coin is that you understand the choices directors make in the movies, or why things happen, so that low tolerance is a fair price to pay for this.

+Michael Nielsen (ToneSlaveMusic) I wouldn't go back to a joyful ignorance. I prefer to be unsatisfied but informed. When you start to understand film directing, cinematography, editing it does prevent you from enjoying mediocre movies but it also give you the opportunity to understand and enjoy movies that would have bored you before. The secret perks is it also give you an extravagant pleasure to watch very very very very bad movies, they become pearls to your eyes in some ways
@aussiepassenger8 жыл бұрын
That may be so, but it's no drama. There are numerous "great" movies, but we are not easily exposed to them and can't easily watch them, because they don't often play in the cinema. That's the real shame :P

where do we find them then?

Hi Tony. Im from Brazil and I am not much of leaving comments on youtube. but your videos are very provocative, so I feel compelled to do. I studied film and I believe that every student tries to visualize a compilation of images around the theories that they study. and his videos are brilliant because they offer a broad view and a very well structured argument, a very particular and consistent view of the various forms and elements that make up the cinema. I'm a big fan of your work. And I use it constantly in the classroom and also in the conversations with moviegoers friends at bar tables, after all the cinema never leaves us. Thank you for spending some time with these videos. great and inspiring work. I said that I was not much of leaving comments, now look at that!! 😋

Thank god you gave Hot Fuzz a recognition, so many scenes are clever in his vision, but i cannot explain why. (the wrong person talked to at crime scene, bomb in the farm, birthday scene, gas station scene, taking weapons out of armory, etc)

I got so happy when you played an Arrested Development clip and a Community clip back to back, but both as good examples and OH MY GOD MONTY PYTHON This video is combining my favorite things and it's already about Edgar Wright
