I did genuinely know about this before hand, but it's pretty situational and it requires you to have your gun out (and auto-reload off) when 95% of the time you want to have your knife out as Spy. You can also only reload once. I feel it would be more useful if when you pressed R it would do the reload animation no matter what weapon you have out or how much ammo it has.

correct me if i am wrong, but i think if you cancel the reload by swapping weapons before it finishes you should be able to fake reloading more than once. this does require like 3 imputs a second on top of movement if you actually want to chain reloads as a real player would. also the animation probably breaks even more if you cancel it

Here’s another Spy Acting Tip I’ve found to work wonderfully well- disguise as Sniper or Medic, switch your disguise’s active weapon to melee, and run around in circles spamming the “Spy!” callout. Personally. My favorite thing to fool people with as spy is pressing b while disguised to change my weapon. A medic holding out his syringe gun all the time is obviously a spy but one constantly switching from his medigun to his ubersaw is way more convincing. Really fooled a lot of people with the switching weapon tactic.

This feature is so incredibly cool I just wish it was a little more fleshed out. You should be able to press (or hold) R at any time regardless of if you actually have to reload and mimic the animation. Being able to hold it would also let you seamlessly mimic reloading multiple rockets, pills, etc

I love the Fact that "Steel Dragon" was Both the Pyro at 4:17 and 5:20 which leaves 2 possible options, either he was SO clueless that he didn't see you both times because he's still unaware of spies OR (The Better Option) he was so smart that he caught onto you the first time and was already 4 steps ahead of you and Knew to not react or chase you to avoid getting trick stabbed causing that Play of the game at the end there. You can also mimic weapons switching with the b key by default to switch to whatever class equivilant thing is in that slot. (b+knife out = melee presented, b+ gun out = primary presented) Coming to an engineer with your melee out and stocking up at a dispenser, THEN reloading can really sell it!

I think this works because people subconsciously or consciously think that a player not firing thier wepon is suspicious, since that's often a very obvious giveaway of a spy. When you reload, you give a reason as to why you aren't firing.

I know about it, but it usually doesn’t fool enemies for long. If they think you’re a spy, they’re probably not even going to notice your reload animation. (Anti-Spy tunnel vision)

I figured out thanks to soundsmith that shooting a shot with the revolver (or any spy primary) while disguised, and doing the reload animation but not fully, does the same thing. It's essentially what this is, but for people with auto reload like me. (Btw, cancel the reload anim by switching before it ends) Ok, quick edit, this method has the upside of infinitely using the same empty bullet reload without having to shoot, reload, shoot etc...

I knew of this before! But I rarely utilized it. Its actually one of the the loading screen tips iirc. You can use this with auto reload too, just shoot once and then switch to your knife, then switch back to revolver to reload whenyou want the animation to play

The main issue with reloading to convince people that you're not a Spy is that anyone who isn't a Spy (trying to do this) or a total newbie will have auto-reload on. Someone reloading the moment you act suspicious of them/spycheck them is going to look even *more* suspicious; because you should be reloading the moment you stop firing.

Right...yes...auto reload...I do that. But in all seriousness I've manually reloaded for so long in TF2 and other games that auto reload would completely mess me up.

One thing you can do is fake fire your weapon (which I've only ever seen one spy do because of how obscure it is) and then reload. The problem with fake firing though is that no bullets come out of your weapon so that is suspicious so it would be better to switch disguised weapon and reload that.

i already do this as spy, except instead of R I just press B to switch weapons, because I usually enjoy having a full revolver, instead of purposefully shooting so i can reload later. But this strat is also pretty damn good, just higher maintenance since you only get one shot at your animation, which won't always work because spy has been broken for like 15 years now. What weapons have noticed works best for fooling people as spy: -Wrangler -Kukri -Sandvich -Bonesaw -Banner -Sword
