Edgeguarding before S4 felt unfair because the important actions happened long before you actually tried to grab the ledge, for non-expert players the whole process felt predetermined by your enemy. Now we have Steve, the actual single reason I stopped playing.

I would say it's more volatile, as most characters before Smash 4 had weak recoveries that were easy to checkmate, so you had to be strategic. Though I admit that there are cases where you're absolutely not getting back the moment you get launched. Still prefer this approach however. Ultimate had a good balance, (Smash 4 made recovery too safe) until they decided to make Smash 64 edgeguarding look tame by giving Steve the ability to just block ledge entirely within seconds.
