thank you for the video, its awesome, very new to derby so this question will sound remedial, but how in game play is this useful (it obviously is) I just want to understand, is this when the jammer is coming up behind you and you want to stop short and block them, is this when the jammer is coming up and you are facing them and want to move towards them and stop without touching them...or you know some other situations.

Hi Adrienne! Great question! Yes, Edge stops are incredibly useful for both of the situations you describe in 1v1 blocking. They're most often used when the jammer is behind you and you want to put on the brakes so they can't push you forward. It helps to stop them in their tracks. Another scenario where edge stops are used a lot is when you're blocking with a partner both facing forward. Using an edge stop or a half plow (i have a video on those too) instead of a full plow stop allows you to work in tighter space with your teammates without worry of your skates getting in one another's way.
