Pluerry cross between cherry and plum is great. The Sweet Treet variety is low chill. They look and taste like huge Rainier cherries. You should get plenty of chill at Nowhere.

We usually get a pretty good amount of chill hours out here. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 is not uncommon.

We almost jumped on there, but we didn't wrap everything up until just about 2pm, so it would have been a stinky mess trying to rush in here! We do plan on having one next Saturday though.

It was odd for us not to have the Podcast. We ALMOST made it on there, but it would have been directly from processing the birds, so it wasn't in the cards!

I have a daughter in Gilbert and I’m sure she is bundled up like you guys as well. I chuckle a little because here in Minnesota 49/50 isn’t all that cold. Lol😂. Mid winter here we have up to -20 quite frequently.

Dwayne - not to be nitpicky, but ripening on the counter is not bletting. Bletting is when you let a fruit go BEYOND ripe to nearly rotten. There are only a few fruit the require bletting before they become edible and tasty. Medlars are one of the best examples.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Ай бұрын
Ah, ok. I know that's what you do with medlars and things like that, so that makes sense.

Hi guys, I had the same problem. When my Satsuma's were green, a flock of black birds almost destroyed all of them in a couple of days. Next year, I will have to put organza bags on them or cover the whole tree. I missed seeing you guys on the podcast. 😊

something ate all my strawberry and black berry baby plants a few weeks ago. I think I have an acrobat/squirrel problem. trying to think of how to protect them as I am planning on planting them in ground soon. Hello from northern AZ.

That definitely sounds like it might be squirrels. We've had the same thing happen with rabbits and if the shoots are small enough quail will take them out too!

Hey Abid. We didn't have one this weekend, because we were processing all of the broiler chickens. We should have one this coming Saturday which will probably be our last of the year.

It was a tough summer for sure. Had 100 degree days clear into October. All my pomegranates were robbed by a rat midsummer so I feel your pain. Going to have to bag things next year.

Same. Bags will need to be metal…
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Ай бұрын
Yeah, someone else mentioned this, but it may need to be metal bags. We're going to try a few of those next year on crops we're trying to get through the summer that always succumb to squirrels/rats.

Quick question how are the pistachio trees going?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Ай бұрын
They're growing, albeit slowly. They are one of the few "stone fruit" type trees we have that are not from RSI growers, so the root stock is just not ideal for us.
@rogerlibby14613
@rogerlibby14613 Ай бұрын
Looks like birds. However, squirrels are always a problem. They like to knock down lots of fruit so they can go back to it later. I've had good results with The Squirrelinator but haven't tried it on ground squirrels.🤠

No doubt it's a little of both right now. We had a nice cold snap this week, so we're hopeful it's driving everyone either South or into hibernation!

I place fruit for the birds from my own tress like, pears, apples, oranges, peaches, etc specially the very ripe ones and the ones that have some cosmetic damage. I cut the fruit crosswise and insert them on the tips of some cages that I usually use for tomatoes plants, the birds do still peck some fruits on the trees but not many. This year I grafted a peach tree and I placed strings to mark them and for some reason the birds did not touch the peaches in that tree except for a couple of them. It looks like the birds were suspicious of the strings although those little creatures learn fast and maybe next year it will not work.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Ай бұрын
Now that is an EXCELLENT idea. We try to leave the partially eaten ones on the tree for a bit to see if they're go after those first.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm So much has happened and at the same time, so little has happened. Heh... I got my first big peach harvest last season. I didn't thin the peaches out so they grew in the thousands like grapes so they didn't get very big but they were delicious. I have those specialty peaches like Snow Angel and other names that I have no idea of at this point. I lost a lot of interest in my orchard because of the 3 hour round trip drive and the hassle of the weeds and gophers and intense heat and watering issues, It's too much when you live far away. But I'm still taking care of the place and am going to thin out the next crop and maybe even sell a bunch. To who I don't know yet but maybe someone who sets up at a farmers market or something. I'm not too concerned either way. I bought a ton of land in Eloy and I'm thinking of starting another orchard there but this time with at least 500 - 1000 trees. But I want to make sure I can live there first for obvious reasons. How's your gopher situation? Did you get a handle on it? Hope you and yours are doing well. Thanks again for all the help and advice.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Ай бұрын
@@buyerofsorts thanks for the update. I was looking at our last communication and wondered if you still had that orchard going. The gophers are still here in full force, but everything has grown out of the "danger zone" in that regard. Lots of space in Eloy, so as long as you can live onsite you should be golden!
