At 9:54 you mentioned you would cover the boot loader message, but seemed to have missed doing so. Other than simply running the command and rebooting, we’re there any issues to be aware off (on an x in my case)? Thank you for your very helpful content which I have only today come across, so one new subscriber.
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you stumbled across me saying I'd explain something that I completely forgot about. I probably had every intention to cover that topic, but just didn't remember to do so. As long as you plan on upgrading the Edgerouter to the newer firmware version, then updating the bootloader should come as second-nature. Just run the command it tells you to, and you will be good to go.

Awesome review, have you found the GUI to be terribly wonky? I can't get it to setup VPN at all, with CLI it's an easy task but there's something very defective about the web UI. Is it just me? Can't add multiple subnets on a tunnel at all - 100% replicatable issue, new settings don't show up, the tunnel is killed, only outcome is delete and start from scratch.
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree completely. I used to setup VPNs in the GUI, but I had more than one occasion where it nearly bricked the router. Since then, I've only configured VPNs in the CLI. I've been very careful about this as any change to the VPN configuration in the GUI will blow away the entire VPN configuration of the CLI. I wish there was a better way, but this is the way I've been dealing with it for years.

You can get console/rollover cables that have a USB connector instead of the old 9-pin serial connector. Windows will just download an applicable driver and away you go.

Is it alright to use the USB port on the ER-4 to just provide power, say, to a PiZero? I plopped PiHole on one, and it seemed like a convenient power source...

I'd imagine so. I've actually never thought of this, but if it supplies the power then I don't see why not.

What if I was wanting to use a switch with this router? I have a Spectrum modem with gigabit speed, wanting to use this router to get internet to my switch that has all my devices plugged in to it. Including WiFi routers that I'm using as access points and a couple of computers. Do I still set it up this way or do I need to do something else?

Nice video. I have a question, i own a Edge Router 6P i use my network for gaming a for KZbin and Streaming services. If i set the edgerouter to offloading Thais Will affect my gaming. I have a 200D and 100U fiber connection, my router os connected to a ONT
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't affect your gaming unless you have something seriously hogging a ton of bandwidth. Those speeds should very easily handle about anything you throw at it, so offloading shouldn't have a problem being enabled. You get into trouble if there are other devices on your network using the majority of the bandwidth, but for that to happen you would need to be torrenting like mad and have a few streams of UHD Netflix for you to notice in your gaming sessions.

Not off the top of my head, but the process is the same. It's all web-based and/or SSH which are supported on MAC. Just the location of where to change network settings or application names may differ.

Hi Toasty, I'm considering buying the ER-4. I do gaming and streaming and I would like to use the ER-4's SQM on my gaming PC to remove buffer bloat. I have a 1gig down/up fiber connection and my gaming PC doesn't need more than 200mbs down/100 up to game on. Is it possible to set up SQM for this bandwidth only for my gaming PC? I don't need SQM for my streaming PC as I allocate all the other bandwidth to it and the stream is stable.
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is possible and I actually have a video on QoS coming soon which will probably help with how to do this. The only part I'm not sure of is if offloading will still be available to the other devices. I always understood that if QoS was enabled then hardware offloading would be disabled for the entire device. However, I have seen a couple forum posts saying that non-qos traffic is still offloaded. I would have to do some extra testing to see if that is true.

it wasn't clear whether or what are the advantages to the er-4? compared to er-x?
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
Basically, it's processing power and overall throughput. The ER-X has less power, but both support the same configurations. There is a bit more information in my Edgerouter vs Security Gateway video when it comes to ER-4 vs. ER-X.

Great video thanks for sharing. I do have a question if you don' mind, is there any penalties by offloading? like losing any functionality?
@ToastyAnswers3 жыл бұрын
The main penalty is that you cannot use QoS with offloading enabled. Configuring QoS will automatically disabled offloading and limit the throughput of the device. DPI used to be affected by offloading, but I believe this has been fixed in newer firmware versions. These are really the only two I'm aware of.

Greetings - great video as usual; however, I have one question. Which would you find a better unit an Edger Router 12P / EdgeMax Router or a UDM Pro? Thanks
@ToastyAnswers3 жыл бұрын
This is tricky, and it really depends on what your goals/interests are. The UDM Pro is a great unit and all-in-one device which meshes very will with Unifi devices. The EdgeMax devices are more "ISP-Oriented" and support more advanced features which most people wouldn't even use. IMO, the EdgeMax devices cover two ends of the spectrum. 1. The "cheap" option for those who just want a router that routes and don't plan on changing configurations. The learning curve is higher in the beginning, but the up-front cost is less. 2. The "advanced" tinkerer who will be neck-deep in their network frequently or those who are used to working on more "enterprise-grade" equipment. The options are there, and configuration can be done by either GUI or CLI without having to mess with a controller. The UDM line, IMO, is for everyone in-between. Honestly, if you're on the fence the UDM is probably the way to go, especially if you like having everything under one dashboard or want more advanced security features (the UDM is capable of threat management where the Edgerouter is only a basic firewall). By the performance numbers, the UDM is the more powerful device. However, it has more load to carry with more software features. Either one would perform just fine in pure routing, but the features and capabilities are what set them apart.

Hi Toasty, I have a question for you. I have an Edgerouter 4 that is connected to a cisco switch (3750) I've configured both devices and Vlans following your other videos, and it works just fine. - Modem - Port 0: Internet - Port 1: LAN 10.10.10.1/24 (Hooked up to cisco switch as a trunk) - Port 2: IOT 192.168.88.1 (DHCP pool) Right now I have an AP-AC Lite Access Point connected to port 2, I just bought another AP-AC Lite Access Point and would like to extend the wifi signal, but I have no idea how to do this. I watched your video about using the wireless uplink feature, but I'd rather use a wired connection for my second AP. Is it possible? will it be easier if I just set up all interfaces in Bridge mode? Do I need to hookup port 2 to the Cisco switch? I know there's probably a lot of background information missing, but I wanted to keep this post as simple as possible. Please let me know if you need more information. Thank you for your time!
@ToastyAnswers3 жыл бұрын
If you are planning on using more than one AP on the IOT network, then I would connect Port 2 of the Edgerouter to the Cisco switch. Create an additional VLAN for IOT traffic, and connect both APs to the switch. If all you are worried about is the single network, then you can get away with just having three ports in access mode for the IOT VLAN (Port to Edgerouter, Port to AP1, and Port to AP2) I wouldn't put interfaces in bridge mode on an ER-4 due to the performance impact.

Hi Toasty Answers, first Thank you for your video tutorial, I learn a lot from your youtube videos keep it up!!, I just want to ask a few questions Where can I find/setup the ACL from EdgeRouter 4 or a way to established a connection from our server to our client server? the connection is more on transfering files from our server (middleware) Thank you and Best Regards

I'm not really understanding the question. You can apply a firewall rule to limit access to certain resources (much like an ACL).

I was happy to learn about the EdgeRouterX setup from your video, but unfortunately my device was defective. I sent it back using an RMA and a few weeks later I received an EdgeRouter 6P as the replacement. Your review of the Edgerouter4 showed some similarities. There seems to be many differences in this device compared with the ERX. Can you do (or have you already done) a video on the basic setup for an EdgeRouter 6P?
@ToastyAnswers3 жыл бұрын
I haven't done a video on the 6P. It should be more similar to the ER-X than the ER-4 since the hardware uses the same chipset. However, I haven't personally been inside the 6P to see the differences first-hand. This is something I will need to look into.
@johnneuwirth21673 жыл бұрын
I set up my Edgerouter 6P using some of the steps you point out in this video. The configuration went fine, but when I connected to my router that offers 200Mb internet service, I only got about 35Mb out of the router. This router has the same processor - 4-core 1GHz MIPS64. Are there some 'offloading' commands I should enter to speed the data up?

Can this support a 2gbs connection?
@ToastyAnswers Жыл бұрын
No, the fastest interface on this device is 1Gbps. You will need to look into devices that support 2.5Gps, 5Gbps, or 10Gbps uplinks to support the full 2Gbps. If you're just asking if it will work with a 2Gbps connection... it should, but you will be using less than half the speed you are paying for.

Is it sufficient for 1000/40 Mbps connection?
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
Please check out my "Edgerouter vs. Security Gateway" video for complete details. It basically boils down to what services you are trying to run on the connection. The ER4 will keep up with gigabit, but not with QoS enabled (although it gets close...).
