Think about this, Bill Polian was questioned and criticized by people about taking Manning instead of Ryan Leaf. Taking Edge instead of Ricky Williams. Goes to show you, don't do things just for PR circumstances. Stay true to you and don't get distracted by others. You don't have to justify why you do something. When the Colts won the Super Bowl, Irsay gave Edge an honorary Super Bowl ring. He said we wouldn't have been there w/o you.
@ariefraiser1402 жыл бұрын
The criticism for taking Manning over Leaf was a myth. There were some people who thought it was a 50/50 decision but hardly anyone thought Leaf was head and shoulders above Manning enough to criticize the Colts for passing up Leaf. The Ricky Williams hype though was real. And coming off his college career almost every pundit and scout had him as the best running back in the draft. A franchise changing back. In fact the Saints gave up multiple picks to move up the draft and picked him. So James over Williams was a major shock.

The first time I saw Edge play for Miami was when they went up against my UCLA Bruins in a game that all UCLA had to do was win and they would have been in the NC game. Edgerrin absolutely destroyed that UCLA defense for 299 yards rushing, and led Miami to an upset and one of the most crushing losses in UCLA college football history. I'll never forget it. That said, I was shocked, dumbfounded and even mad that they took him over Heisman trophy winner Ricky Williams. Well' turns out that was one of the greatest decisions in that franchise history, 2nd only to them taking Peyton over Ryan Leaf just a year before.

Lets not beat around the bush, the only reason he was such a "controversial" pick was because of racist stereotypes and bigoted individuals. He looked like a "street thug" by stereotypes, so people automatically assumed he was going to be some loser. Kind of like the difference between saying there's a better burger than the Big Mac [I mean even McDonald's executives probably concede this is true in many places], and asserting that the only reason that burger isn't as popular as the Big Mac is racism. It's marketing and buzz and casual fandom.
