Yeah, both have their purpose, and both were done. Sword is a tool and if you need a good parry you won't worry that much about a chip in the edge.

that's the thing, it didn't matter what part of the sword you parried with, it just mattered that you didn't die! i would dare to say, that in a real situation that you could mentally do a single thought out pary, but after that you're just blocking to stay un hit. love the vids,keep them up!

Trying to party with the flat to preserve your sword is like strapping yourself on the hood of your car to protect the car in case of crashes.

I personally practice blocking on the strong of the blade if I'm blocking with my edge, I also try to get my edge on their flat (Zornhau) and just straight up using the flat for hanging parries.

Yep, flat for hanging with a thumb grip and then a counter has won me so many matches. It's just so much faster than using the edge. I've not found many other uses for it in application though.

I just thought that eermmm hilt parry as a last resort panic move. I think that when you are really panicin about losing your fingers, they really wouldn't be anywhere but out of the strike. Thecnically a bad move = yes, but as panic move it might work. In last resort.

SlashXVI Even if you can and successfully hit the target, the worst it can give is mildly hurt the enemy. I can imagine it being like the Austin Powers shoe toss scene (clenches forehead) "That really hurt! I'm gonna have a lump there, you idiot! Who throws a pommel? Honestly! You fight like a pansy!"

I am very new to HEMA but I have studied Silat and several other blade arts for more than 20 years and there is something you are not understanding about what is meant by edge on edge parry. Only two of the movements you showed actually involved direct edge on edge force. Sorry I don't know there names in a HEMA context. The first guard were you showed using the edge to guard against the rising cut and near the end were you showed (I think its called the OX guard) using the edge are the only two that would result in edge on edge force and are also the ones you can avoid most of the time. it the rest the direction of force are at an angle to each other even though the edges make contact. This makes a massive difference to the damage your edge gets with a live sword. Direct force you usually get scallops, angled force just rolled edges and bends.

Yes, though with a proper cutting sword it isn't much of an issue. When you start to get into thin, later period thrust oriented weapons it can be more of a concern.

Any blocks and/or blocks purely with the guard?

You can guard purely with the guard but it becomes very risky. #1 because you are extremely close to your hands. It only takes a slight mistake in judgement, or a slight adjustment by your opponent, and that's your hand. #2 if you opponent catches on to what you are doing they can easily move around the parry and it's hard for you to react from that position. In terms of parrying the cross-guard it there mainly for insurance to increase the safety of regular blocks.

It will play a significant roll when working blade on blade contact to execute techniques, but at that point the blades are already in contact and it prevents the sliding into the hands. (if positioned properly...)

I...what? I see how you could catch your opponent's sword on your hilt, but why? Using literally any other part of your sword is safer. It's like Martin "Oz" Austwick said in one of his videos on his EnglishMartialArts channel, there are two rules in HEMA, and rule number 1 is "Don't get hit."

Keep in mind that technique is from Joachim Meyer. By the time of that manual sword fighting had begun to become sportified and was no longer solely a battlefield tactic and thus some "fancy" but less practical techniques were being used (including stances that would be your immediate demise).
