Shopping in the mall at the Lucky Market will definitely cost more. If you want to pay local prices you have to shop at the local markets and haggle. I am American and I lived in Phnom Penh for a year. The first few months of living there I was getting ripped off just by going to the wrong market. Cost of living in Cambodia varies depending on ones personal comfort level. 1st apartment was $350 1000sq ft. 2nd apartment was $200 for the same space/amenities just down the street.

the Things you are talking about are imported so they will be more expensive. I know that milk, cheese, butter, and yogurt are not staples of asian diets so I expect to pay more for them. Usually i buy milk when it it is less than 2.00 a liter. As for tuk tuks they have pass app and tada. Once you know the prices for your destination you can barter with tuk tuk drivers. Obviously if it cost me 2.00 to go from Stueng Meanchey to Sorya Mall it should cost the same to return. Just let them make a quote and if it is too high let them know that you got here for 2.00. Usually they will lower the price for you a bit. I personally like going to markets more than the mall because it gives me the opportunity to practice Khmer with local people. I have lived her for about 4 years and can now have basic conversations with Cambodians. I know numbers, color, farm animals, big and small, names of reptiles, and how to say I like things. Cambodia becomes much more fin place once you start speaking the local language and are able to interact with locals. It is like that everywhere. I have a lot of fun living in China due to my ability to speak Mandarin. Cambodians become much more friendly when you start speaking Khmer to them.

I spent 6 weeks in Siem Reap in 2015 and my experience with prices was different than yours.... The first night I found a little eating spot around the corner from the hotel that served a big plate of rice W/chicken, grilled onion, side of cucumber or tomato, bowl of broth, and bowl of Kimchi for $1.50US. Even though I moved to a different hotel further away I liked this place so much I'd walk the 20 minutes to visit with the friendly owner and have a cheap meal... Beer was 50 cents a can. Even near Pub Street, which is the center of the tourist area of the most tourists in Cambodia they advertised beer for 50-75 cents... I'll be heading back in a few months....thanks for your videos....

Lol! I agree about don't let the tuk-tuk driver take you to the hotel because you gonna rip off but about the price, I think you were wrong. Let me explain to you about Cambodia, Normally the price in the supermarket is expensive and the things you told us are imported so it's double expensive by the way. Normally if you want a low cost, you have to buy the local products at local market (ផ្សារដើមគរ នាសមាស). Otherwise, I agree that the price of south Vietnam is cheaper. Because Vietnam is socialism, they use more local; products. That the advantage of socialism

in many shopping centers you can find a lucky supermarket. 1 liter milk about 1,4-1,8 dollar. I think you went to a very expensive Supermarket. Everything you said is in lucky supermarket much chaepaer. But cambodia is importing many things, even rice., from thailand. ( I lived in cambodia already more than 1 year ) If you watch a blockbuster in cinema you pay 2,5-3,5 dollar. But the popcorn and drinks are ver expensive, I game bowling 5-6 dollar. etc etc

The thing about mall in Cambodia, generally fail because the local just wouldn’t go in. This store in particular got that same problem but the fact that it’s so desperate to have any revenue to pay for it expenses price here is just speechless making local further dislike shopping in mall, nowadays mart chain like AEON provide same reasonable price with great variety(there haven’t got much profit yet but it’s their strategies to bring Cambodian people to shop at mall).

@@Edgesofearth I went to Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2016 and stayed there for a week before heading to the countryside. While staying in PP, I remembered going to the fruit store to buy some apple, cherry and strawberry for my relatives who live in Phnom Penh. The price for those imported fruit were very expensive. I don't think the normal working class local can afford those type of fruit, but the place was very busy. I guess most of their customers are either the middle class or the rich. And yes, food is expensive. I spent $50 to feed 5 people at a noodle soup place ( Pho). I want to say that, if you're to move from the US to live in PP, Cambodia and want to keep the same lifestyle as you have in the US, the cost of living there would be comparable to the one in San Diego, CA. But you can also live in Cambodia as a king at the same cost outside of PP.

Hey Brock, Great video. I am currently in Phnom Penh. (departing tomorrow for Bangkok and then Nepal) You are spot on about the pricing and tuk-tuk drivers. I got ripped off yesterday (the last time...my own fault) when I wanted a ride to S21. I was quoted 3.00 one way. On the way, I was talked into 10.00 to stop by 3 other places of interest. Well, we never truly stopped by but "drove by" these places that were essentially on the way. I'm tired of haggling/being squeeze here and I am ready to leave. I thought it was me! Very expensive...Tuk-tuk drivers out of control. Groceries are a fortune, eating out is a fortune. Massage is double anywhere else that I've been. It is beyond me. I've enjoyed my stay here but I have spent more here than anywhere in SE Asia. I probably won't be back. All the best! Dan

I'm with you on that. I know you are a fair person and I certainly consider myself one as well. As westerners, we will always be considered "rich". I know I will never get local prices but some of the things I've been quoted were from another universe. I then see Bentley's and Rolls Royces (not to mention the Range Rovers) sailing up and down the streets. The import duty on these vehicles are 4x plus the price in the states...yet here they are. A lot of inequality here. I don't know how it maintains itself?@@Edgesofearth

Hi Brock, greetings from Portugal. I will visit Cambodia this summer and one of the things I am most concerned is eating fresh fruit. Every one tells me that I cannot eat fresh fruit nor drink those fruit juices because of parasites. Have you ever got any problems with that?
@Edgesofearth
@Edgesofearth 6 жыл бұрын
- I would not be worried about parasites with fruits and vegetables. Parasites, however, can be found in meats and improperly prepared food of any kind. Anything that comes in contact with a lot of dust or dirt. The worst case scenario when eating raw fruits or vegetables, is a worm inside. This is frequent. The use of pesticides and herbicides isn't like in the West. When in Vietnam, I bit into one of their fruits chewed it and swallowed it. After I looked at the remaining in my hand, I realized I bit into a massive infestation of worms. Disgusting :-). Now, I have learned to be careful. No sickness, just protein. LOL

These vendors have to make their ends meet and need that money to run their family and provide a safety net for the rainy days. In fact I make it a point to eat at the street vendors a small bit to help where they need the money the most. The big businesses are publicly funded or have enough VC backing. Let’s support the local businesses to give some meaning to our tourist visits.

I'm in Amish country on a 8 month contract, rural communities. Overall the cost of living comes in at 20% lower then a normal larger city in general area and 70% lower then cities on the coast. Traveling America is expensive Hotels etc, if you want to do it for next to nothing while still living 1st world style... RV or Travel Trailer is the way to go. I'm chilling in a Travel Trailer right now, outside the window some horses are grazing. The AC is on my internet is about 2mb (wireless) downloading season 2 of Stranger things atm. The camp ground I'm at is $1000 for 8 months. I have been a lot of places in the world, America offers some very low cost and high standard of living if you think outside the box a bit. Heading to Ecuador for 4-5 months when the contact is up here, but sometime late next year want to check out SEA for a few months. Doing a little research on SEA as i have only been to Japan and China, I like your vids nice to see something that is not all about the whole sex-tourist crap, keep it up. p.s. you might like India I enjoyed it the few months i was there, head to the smaller cities.

Dear Sir, First and formost I wanted to say thank you for your vlogs on Cambodia. I've watched over a dozen of your vlogs or so and the presentation is very nice and overall very easy to watch and follow. What you are doing is great, however in some instance your comments about the condition and cleanliness seem to be condesending to say the least towards the people of the contry. Please don't take this the wrong way but it is not a fair comparison at all when you take a third world undeveloped country and compare it to the United States. Also from one of your other vlogs about the cost of things in Cambodia, in particular the cost of a tuk tuk ride for $1.00 per kilo, please try to understand that for some people in the country, that is the only way they can make an income to support themselves and family. So unlike here in the greater western world, people can get general relief from the state or government in addition to the plethora of jobs that are available. So again, I love your channel and I will continue to watch and tell people about you, but all I am saying is to be a little more senstive to the conditions and understand that these people have been doing things for hundreds of years now, and if you really take the time to understand them first before you give your opinion, which for the most part has a bias, then maybe you would not say things that is politically correct.

Cambodia... expensive? How strange given most tourists go on and on about how cheap Cambodia is. In Siem Reap, along Pub Street I paid just 50 cents for a frosty cold mug of beer and $1.50 US for a mixed drink. The guesthouse I stayed in... $10 US per night for an aircon room with cable TV, free coffee every morning and as much free water as I could drink every day. Expensive? I don’t think so, but that’s just me. 😎 Maybe Vietnam overall is cheaper than Cam.

The Khmers are great hustlers :) And you need to learn to bargain when you are in this wonderful Kingdom. If you learn some basic Khamai you will often get better prices. As for the tuktuks you just have to bargain hard, many times i went decent distances for just 1-2 dollars. Or payed only like 10-15 dollars for one tuktuk guy to take me around for 5-6 hours to different locations and waiting for me outside until I was ready to go to my next place. Thats a great deal if you ask me. Also you have to remember that many Khmers only make like 120-200 dollars a month in salery while westerners working there make maybe 1000-1200 dollars a month for a teaching job. So in some sense its understandable that westerners pay a little more in some cases. But beeing friendly aswell as trying to speak some khamai as you bargain you will get alot better prices then what the starting price was :) People need to eat, pay for medicines, pay for schools for there children etc, so I fully understand why people trying to make some extra money from westerners who usually are alot richer then most of the population there.

Yeah I understand that. And as you said in youre next video I just watched, bargaining is natural over there and there is no shame in doing it. Aslong as there isnt a fixed price tag on something you just have to bargain hard and you will get a good price that leaves both sides happy. Sure they might not make as much profit, but they still make a profit or they wont go for it.

Where can you get a room for $50 that would cost 4 or 5 times more in the west? I don't think you can... So, completely broke i spent just a bit over $100 in a month staying in a gorgeous and awesome hostel in Siem reap (White Rabbit, you'll love it) for $2/night and eating cheap food for $1/day and yeah, cheapest restaurants aren't from $2.5 but generally $1.25 and street food can be even cheaper. Instead of repeating your list you could have filmed the articles in the supermarket, much more impressive i guess. But anyway you just found the most expensive place in the country. Now go to a local market where things are ten times cheaper, lol. that's where the locals go.

For example, a grocery store is the cheapest, the most expensive place is a gas station or convenience store. There were many things in Cambodia that were were expensive then in the United States. Chocolate is another example.

Nice informative video as always. I can't help but notice, the price of food items in Vietnam,Cambodia and Vietnam are rather more expensive compared to Malaysian prices. As a Malaysian myself, I can boldly say, except for cigarettes, beer and other alcoholic drinks where a heavy "sin tax" is applied, the price of food is pretty much cheaper comparitively. KFC and Macdonalds restaurants are open 24 hours daily. Most Mamak "indian muslim" restaurants, where very affordable food is available, are open 24 hours daily as well.

Not true at all. UNTAC did distort the rental and guest house market, not the INGOs, but that effect has dissioated over time. As for food, much is imported, bribes have to be paid when it crosses the border and energy (fuel and electricity) is expensive in Cambodia.

Comparing America to Cambodia, Cambodia is cheaper. It is okay to pay a little bit higher it is still cheaper than in US. A motel in the US will cost at least $90 per night. The Cambodian got to support their family. $200 per month salary is not enough for the Cambodian in rural area and $400 per month salary is not enough for the Cambodian in city area. South East Asian people do not like to be taken picture or video tape it should be automatic understood.
@Edgesofearth

- I paid any price that I was told. I never negotiated. However, it is the principle that matters the most. If a person offers a night in a hotel at X dollars per night, that person should not increase her price because the customer is from a different country. To me, this is a sign of disrespect.

It's kind of related, for example, in San Diego, CA every tourist places there are two prices. If you are not a local San Diego you will pay a higher prices to visit. If a foreigner come to study in America the tuition are much higher. Also, If you are a Native American you have some leeway and exceptions on income taxes. In Cambodia the local Cambodian can not pay the regular price like the visitors, therefore they pay the discounted price. Let me put it this way, Cambodia is kind of like the Native American Reservation.
@Edgesofearth
@Edgesofearth 6 жыл бұрын
- yeah, I'm aware of universities charging a higher tuition to foreigners or someone from out of the county. In my mind, this is ridiculous. A paying student is a paying student, where they come from should not be of any concern to the business. However, when I wrote the last message to you, I was not referring to brick-and-mortar businesses, per se. I was referring to anyone on the side of the road in any part of the country that I traveled to, the tourist area or far away from the tourist area. I was always charged more.

It's a misunderstanding between foreigner and local. In South East Asia the Vietnamese and Chinese and others have influence over the locals. The Native South East Asian are honest in their dealing. The Native people are very dark skin with curly hair hope they will kick every non Native people out of their homelands. Then rebuild their countries back. Later we can all visit any countries in South East Asia and will pay the same price as any others. The Khmer and Champ people have lost so much, so give them a break. I know we all want to be fair. Next time if you open your heart and be kind to them they will give you a better price. The Native are becoming the minority in their homeland. Just like the Native American in America. The Chinese and Vietnamese are originally from present day mainland China since their arrival it has been hard on the Native South East Asian people.

Cambodia before 1975, for a teenage female native or foreigner you can tour every part of the country when you run out of money and you ask for help the local will take you in and provide you with free meal and a free night to sleep. Then you can hitch hike your way back. Or the local pay for your ride back. Now a days Cambodians are confuse with foreigners. There are many kind foreigners in Cambodia; some are expat, some became citizen, some immigrant, some are illegal immigrant and some just pass through Cambodia.

I'm surprised you're making a video about costs in Cambodia without staying a while in the kingdom... In another video, you explain that you're going to avoid tourist places ! Then, you're explaining how much you pay for this and that, in touristic cities !? If you had been a few days outside Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, you would have understood Cambodia's cost of life... Next time maybe !

- A) an entire city does not qualify as a tourist area. there are many areas within the city that are not the tourist area. B) I did travel outside of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap for several days, you should see some of my other videos. C) the cost of living as a Cambodian is different than the cost of living as a foreigner. almost every Cambodian refused to give me the local price. That is fact. I know what the local price was because I would ask for the locals before I tried to purchase the item. the price was almost always double or triple that a local person. twenty seven days in cambodia was definitely long enough to learn about the prices. if i visit cambodia again, i will go to the north east.
