Nice to finally see someone knows how to mulch a tree and not cover the root flare. My neighbor is a landscaper and runs mulch 2 feet up the trunk burying the root flare. I call them mulch volcanos. This guy nailed it perfectly. Not only does this method keep the mulch Out of the lawn but keeps the grass From growing into the mulch area. Well done!

also keeps mowers from getting too close to the tree.

Agree with the over mulching. As a MasterGardener, I went to the home of a woman whose foundation plants were failing. They were so over mulched. She said her lawn guy did it. I recommended she pull the mulch away from her trunks and get a different lawn guy.

Too many of these bad volcano making landscapers in business. Did they teach each other bad techniques? Too many trees and landscapes are suffering premature deaths.
@RushWorkingMan

I guess this proves how much wrong information keeps getting passed on. Even the village public works department in town have been over mulching trees way up the trunk. All these trees were replacing trees killed by the Emerald Ash Borer. I hear over 100k in town have been replaced, and since, many of them have been replaced because they ended up dying. One would think one person in the Public works dept would have the education on how to mulch trees. Yet they keep doing this and not only killing young trees but waste so much mulch. My landscaper neighbor killed his. Buying a lawn mower doesn’t make me a landscaper anymore then buying a hammer makes me a carpenter.

I have neighbors who take care of their yards, but they are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. Those immediately left and right have what I call a "different" standard of care...grass reaches 8" tall, scalp to 2.5", no edging, barely blow clippings, big warm welcome to everyone weed known to mankind. 🤣🤣

great job. I do the same in my landscape business. Only thing different is that I use a flat shovel since a standard shovel is cupped. And I use the flat shovel to cut under to make the ground nice and flat before adding mulch. Flat hovel with a D handle. When trees don't have irregular flares to them, I just use a long stick with a mark on it, and put the stick against the truck and make painted dots all around then connect the dots witht the shovel.

I did it, it works great. About the knot I used, where ever you want to join the string make a simple Marlinspikes knot, double over your tag end stick it through the loop in the Marlinspike , then pull on the main line, when your finished just pull hard on the tag end and the complete knot unravels. no knots in the string. I`m not a Boy Scout either, just an old youtuber!

A for effort. I've done a few of those in my time. First time, pretty close to what he did. Last time I used my gas edger to make the first cut; when you're older you look for ways to save the back. Also, I'd consider putting landscape fabric down to keep the grass/weeds from coming up through the mulch. Helpful hint to do it on the cheap, turn old carpet back-side up and trim to fit, it works like a charm. Lastly, I like to keep the mulch back from the outer edge by a couple inches. That way, when you mow, you can put the inside wheels down into the trench...without throwing out mulch in to the yard. Keep it up...nice yard!

Beautiful natural edge. Well done. I ran with this style edge for two years. Natural edge is considered the best by most good pro landscapers. Best quality edges do require strong maintenance practices. I pulled the mulch back from the grass about eight to ten inches. The soil will naturally compact itself and make trimming easier with power equipment. The shovel will show it’s self about twice a year in Florida. This year I added metal edging that reduced the maintenance by 80%. Still has the same good looks. Good luck.

Every time I use that marking paint, I end up with orange shoes! My method is to attache a rope from the tree to a half-moon shovel to make the first cut. It makes a perfect circle every time.

Thats a great method also. I just like to see my outline before I cut so I can make changes if necessary.

Your yard looks better in December then mine does in June. . .
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that! It's the result of good aerating, overseeding with quality seed, and good fall fertilizing. Depending on where you live and the type of grass you have June can be tough on grass. For cool season lawns we prepare 9 months out of the year for the hardest 3 months of the year June, July, and August.

Thank you for this amazing instruction! Beautiful yard. What would you recommend for a row of trees (20) that vary in size to make them match? Our HOA doesn’t have the money to hire out so it would be many volunteers at different times. So appreciate any kind of advice you can share.
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend that you pick a circle diameter that you like that will fit your largest tree. This will mean that you will have more actual mulch area round the smaller trees but the circles will all be the same size. If you do not like that look then pick a circle size for the large trees and a circle size for the smaer trees. You will use the same methods as the video. The key is make sure you have the same measurement from the center of the tree to your desired edge. The tree as the anchor will do the rest to make it symmetrical no matter the actual size of the tree. Hope that helps!

Is it better to laydown a weed barrier beneath the mulch or no?
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I do not see the benefit of the additional cost and labor. You will still need to apply a pre emergent like Preen or Snapshot for the best control of weeds in your beds. I only use a pre-emergent and I reapply my pre-emergent at the label re-application duration. I have very few weeds in my beds during the season with this method.

I always lay landscape fabric down... Sometimes I double it if there are a lot of weeds in that spot.. I use the grey vigaro from Home Depot... Cost a little more, but I don't even have to think about weeds in my bed anymore. I like to do things once. Lol **I also use stone instead of mulch... No need to refresh every couple of years like mulch. Again, I like to do things once, but to each their own of course. 🙂
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 3 жыл бұрын
@@chris_favreau I agree with you on doing things once. My thing with the fabric is eventually weed seeds get on top of the fabric and start growing from there. The fabric works well for keeping weeds from growing from the soil up but not from top of the fabric up. That is my experience with it. Like I say, there is more than 1 way to do lawncare and people have the right to do what works best for their lawn 👍🏾🌱. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾!
