Congratulations Danny! This looks so amazing I cannot wait. I am a freelance commercial editor who works here and there with some agencies and post houses so I know a few edit workflow tricks that might help ya out: 1) Yes, mixers will want all the tracks for each clip used when you send them, but we NEVER edit with all the tracks in the timeline. When pulling in your selects, you should only use the one track that is most relevant/sounds best (whether it's a lav for the actor speaking or a boom or what have you). Then, when we send it to a mixer, we have an assistant editor do what's called mix prep (in your case you could do it yourself pretty easily), where they duplicate the sequence, and clip by clip, use the match frame hotkey and pull the rest of the relevant tracks into the timeline. It's grunt work but it only takes like 2 minutes for a 30 second commercial so you could do it pretty quick for this and it is well worth the headache of cutting with all these tracks. Premiere will run way faster too and be less prone to crashes. 2) At 7:32 I noticed an encoding error, not sure if it's on this video itself as uploaded to YT or on your proxies but are you working with h.264 proxies? Those tend to not be ideal for actual editing with, I suggest dnxHD, they're fast as well but every frame is a true frame instead of having frame interpolation. Techy tech stuff. 3) Editing dialogue, I really highly recommend three great resources that are actually very practical and no bullshit. I agree it's totally up to you and about how you want the scene to feel but the rhythm of dialogue can be practiced. -The Every Frame a Painting video on KZbin called "The Coen Brothers - Shot Reverse Shot", there's a lot of stuff about on-set choices like lens choice in the front half but it gets down to editing in the back half -"In the Blink of an Eye" by Walter Murch (really short book but he's one of the greatest editors of all time and his advice is solid) -Any Coen Brothers movie at all, especially Inside Llewyn Davis I'd also just like to implore you to not rush yourself. You put this thing together so quickly, take as long as you need. Your audience will be patient with you while you continue to polish before locking picture. I've hardly heard of somebody editing a feature this damn quickly, if you need to sit on it longer please do! Cannot wait to see this movie man, congratulations again and happy editing!

Yeah completely agree with what you're saying - it'll be better for Danny to use Prores rather than DNxHD though as he's on a Mac, pretty sure DNxHD is a codec that macs don't tend to play well with it
@ScottyGibsonn
@ScottyGibsonn Жыл бұрын
@@AxTechs I'm pretty sure that encoding issue is on the screen recording video file and not on the Sony Venice footage of the movie. I have a feeling Danny just uses quicktime to screen record and not a dedicated screen recording software like Screenflow. Quicktime exports .mov files that can be problematic with Premiere unlike most screen recording software that export .mp4

Looks awesome!! Congrats on the assembly! Saw some other editors mention some audio tips, so I wanted to give another potentially helpful tip for editing this beast haha. I know you said you liked the chaos of the complete assembly instead of editing scene by scene and mashing it together - what you can do instead is also edit in “reels.” Reels in long-form editing can be anywhere from 10-25 minute chunks of the film… this way you can spend time polishing each scene and then working on the whole sequence of scenes without screwing up the rest of the movie. Reels help you “zoom in” to edit the details but also “zoom out” to watch how the scenes connect. Looks great so far and can’t wait to see it!

Congrats Danny on the film! I often don’t delete extra audio sources/clips to keep them as a reference, but what I do is “disable” them so they are greyed out and you don’t have to listen to chaos lol. I set up a shortcut “cmd + shift + e” so I can enable/disable clips quickly. And since you can drag-select over multiple clips, it’s fast.

Congrats! Audio note: I'm editing a series right now (that I directed), and my audio layers are similar. However, I suggest deleting all but two tracks.. usually there is a mix included in the various channels. Keep those two tracks to edit, and then when you're done, you can match frame and rebuild the audio.. This is definitely time consuming, but I'd rather edit freely, and quickly - then deal with the audio tracks when I'm close to picture lock.

It's nice to follow your progression to the completed movie. Thanks for sharing with me. I think you need a strong vision of what you want to see at the end to get to where you are. Without that strong vision, you'll get glop instead of a movie.

As a film editor myself, I wonder why you didnt consider working with an editor? I bet a great editor with an objective perspective on your material would elevate your films story even more. Especially when it comes to dialogue, killing or switching sentences have such a big impact on your characters and your story and I often see directors struggle with those kind of decisions.

Thanks for the peak behind the curtain. It looks really great. I've been editing for around 10 years, but still have yet to tackle anything feature length. Super cool to see a bit of that process for this one. I totally get that anxiety that comes with having a massive amount of audio tracks going though. It can get a bit unwieldy with that audio all in a premiere timeline.

I am so looking forward to seeing this because I’ve been following the behind the scenes from the very beginning. it’s been wonderful to see such a creative person open up their thought process and expose their vulnerabilities from time to time. Very interested to see the process of taking this project and sending it off to a sound editor and also a colorist. I’m in the middle of editing my most involved project that I have worked on to date. It’s a documentary. I’m not even sure how I would possibly hand this off to anyone else based on the convoluted way I edited this from several different sources in the whole other hard drives and that sort of thing. Would be interested on your perspective on how to keep this organized so that handoff works. I think I just rambled on a bit also! Lol. keep up your awesomeness :-)
