What do you do if you make a mistake when recording to analog tape? In this video we'll show you how to correct an error when a musician makes a mistake while recording to tape. In this example we have a bass track with a mistake in it. The track was recorded live with the rest of the band but the bassist one wrong note during the take. So rather than have the band re-record the entire song, we're going to use a method called 'Punching in' or 'Dropping in'
This is where we play the track with the bassist playing along, and when we get to the part with the error. The engineer for the session will punch in the armed track and the erroneous note will be recorded over with a fresh new one, but it's up to the engineer to get the punch in point exactly right and the musician to play the part correctly or the procedure will have to be repeated over a greater part of the song.
