I think people who work with audio are wizards for real-this was so helpful! For a video I’m making, I need to edit out some lyrics, so I will try that first trick of matching beats and masking the cut. I will do my best, thank you very much!

Why is youtube hiding this

Thank you for the really solid advice-- from someone who has always used those lousy-sounding cross-fades you taught us how to avoid.

Very good. How did you get the yellow highlights on the audio tracks?

Extremely helpful, especially the reverb trick. Can you just make a comment on how you added the silence in the compound clip? It wasn’t obvious how you added the silence ( sorry for the newbie question:-). Thanks!

No problem! Since I was doing the edit in Final Cut Pro, I used the "Insert Gap" function to add what is essentially a blank clip to be used as my "silence". I did it using the option+W keyboard shortcut. Alternatively you can do it manually from the edit menu (Edit>Insert Generator>Gap)

I have done shortening of songs but I typically use a hard cut, finding the right place to do the cut, and I haven't had a problem with that. So I'm curious as to why you always do some sort of crossfade instead of a hard cut? I realize there are times when the crossfade helps, but I find I do hard cuts more often. And that last reverb trick was really awesome! And yes, I can see the value of the crossfade in that one.

Just starting watching....BUT I want to make a comment on your absolutely shameless plug for Epidemic Sound....Epidemic Sound is an amazing music library. Very large selection, which is good. But what's amazing is that a lot of the music is REALLY GOOD. I was expecting a bunch of crappy canned music-- there's actually much, much more good music to choose from. I even find myself taking short breaks to listen to it while I'm editing. One caveat-- the sound FX library is limited and often disappointing. Envato is a little better, but not great either. I'd love to hear suggestions about a sound effects library, if anybody has one.
