Good editorial Mr Sujit...what I feel is we dont view the population problem in totality rather we keep focusing on religion...Over population is a big problem which needs to be tackled for overall development and growth...by the way our driver who was a localite from Mumbai Maharashtra had 2 wives(incidentally they were sisters )and 7 children and he was a hindu...I say this in past tense as he expired during corona.....so can we look beyond religion ..and education should be priority not just for muslims but for everyone then only problems can be addressed rationally and wisely.

From a statistician's perspective, you have missed several crucial ratios in this comparison. Statististician's perspective is not religious but mathematical. Among at least 5 other ratios you missed, one key ratio was : . [hindu population]/[Muslim Population] . This ratio has declined faster than decline of fertility which means that if this trend continues, eventually both populations will become equal in certain number of years (approximately 58 years). Somewhere in between, muslims would still have a sustainable 2.1 fertility rate while hindu rate would had fallen way below on waterfall decline. Very soon thereafter, the hindu population will decline much faster while in comparison to sustained muslim population whereby it will become impossible le for hindu population to recover enough. That much was statistics. If we look at the mindset, Muslims will after crossing 33% or even say 40% population share, boost up their fertility rate and start eliminating competing hindu fertility rate, forcing it further down. This seemingly straightline curve would become exponential then. So, hopefully you see the future a little better.

Thanks Mr. Nair for pointing out the PM-EAC's mischief (or should I say ignorance) of playing with numbers. As such, the paper is not worthy of serious attention. But being a product of such a high body of professional economists, one must not refrain from commenting on the quality of the work. The measure commonly used for measuring rate of change in share is the simple difference between the shares, expressed as percentage points, and not percentage of change. Using the percentage measure the paper has arrived at a figure of 43% for the growth in the share of minorities (not just Muslims). The same measure, when used for Maldives, throws up a figure of 865% growth in the share of minorities. 😊 In fact, this is not the first time that the PM-EAC has blundered while dealing with statistics. Last year, they had come up with an equally naive paper suggesting 99% reduction in the sample size adopted by the National Sample Survey.

In statistics, percentages only make sense when we talk about large numbers. For small numbers, percentages can be misleading. Whenever someone talks about percentages, they should also present the raw numbers. If the muslim population were small in the beginning, then their percentage numbers might seem inflated.
