An ILO/IPMI/ is such a bless. No noisy fans of dozens of servery when working on a failed server. It is a shame, that HTML5 took so long to get adopted as KVM, java *****. I have one VM with an old java just to reach some old web start applications, which not work on modern java.

Indeed, sitting next to a rack really sucks, it’s warm and the same time cold. Noisy and in some places there is no WiFi / cellphone reception and may be a pain in the ass even to get there. Having the field engineer just connect cables and fixing the OOB is much nicer 😎

Thats totally correct, no need to drive somewhere in the first place when vpn and ilo is enough. You also mentioned KVM switches, back in the days we had a lot of them. Holy, what a waste of time and cables, as every server need ts own dedicated network cable for the kvm adapter (although we had one switch where you could daisy chain the adapter, so only one cable from switch to server). But these times are gone, thankfully.
