Practice your welding, Ed. A little leading angle will flatten out your beads, which will eliminate some of your grinding, and you'll have less melt through, like on your outside corner. I'm not an expert, its just what I do for a living.

This is a nice looking stove. One important suggestion, It looks like it will tip forward due to the front foot being set back. I would suggest adding another pice of the same 1x1 stock to form a “T” with the front foot. Have it stick out 3-4” towards the front.

@jenky10446 жыл бұрын
Nice job. From what I see you won't have any problems with the steel getting too hot and melting running it this way. And yes, a damper of some kind would give you heat control. The only thing I can see is it would be top heavy if you had too much weight sitting on top of it. (Try it on uneven ground with a heavy pot of water... that'll help your footprint design on any newer models). Awesome job.

I really like this design Ed because it orients the fuel feeding chamber and the air intake in the same direction. I want to make one as an emergency device in case things go TU so I can actually cook in my fireplace if needed. The only feature I'm thinking about adding is a shelf on the back where I can place a heat powered stove fan to blow the heat back into the room. I also appreciate the way you oriented the cooking grate because you could easily slide an extension piece in there for a taller flu if desired. Thanks for making this video brother.

I see just 1 improvement you can make to this design and that is to add on 2 additional stabilization legs on the opposite end of the cooking platform in the and in the opposite direction for stability to prevent tipping in case a pot of water is heavy or there is a bump. this would pretty much prevent any chance of tipping over.
@ReeceHud3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed. If you're still active regularly, can you remember the dimensions for the 3 parts of material?
@thebackyardwelder52676 жыл бұрын
Great build however....... I've built a few of these in various ways. The one ive found best at this size is to fit a simple hinged flap over the feed pipe to massively increase the draw of air. This produces a far higher temperature and much cleaner/efficient burn. Second thing is to fit an adjustable flap over the air intake pipe. With the feed flap closed you can adjust the amount of air entering which will adjust the temperature at the top. Careful not to starve the fire though.
@EdMakesStuff6 жыл бұрын
After I had finished it, I realised a little door over the fuel infeed would help it burn better and create more draw. I didn't think of a door over the air intake. I have a wood stove in my house and that has 2 adjustable vents on the bottom of the doors and when the vents are fully open the fire roars. I'm guessing it would work on the same principle as that? Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching, ED

Not being critical, you lay in the weld with a stick, you push a weld with a mig. Your welds look nice. Try the push from your right hand to the left starting on the right. Weave or swirl creates better penetration you may find your amps could be dropped a little. Ive not built a rocket stove but agree with others. The pot is on the wrong end, updraft would be lost as the riser is affectively shorter and gas is coming back out. Put a flap to block the fuel feed. With a slide gate you could create a throttle on the air inlet for cooking. Im just an old fitter who spent too much time on boilers. Nice project thou.
@EdMakesStuff6 жыл бұрын
I have tried the push method and i just cant seem to get it right, I tried a basic fillet weld on some quarter inch plate and it had a lot of spatter, The bead looked OK and the joint was strong. I have just about got the hang of pulling so i find it a bit awkward pushing with positioning and torch angle etc.. My welder has preset settings(1.2.3) so it is basically all the power, half the power, or very little. I think i need to have a few days just practising on various bits of scrap to get a better feel for it. Thanks for the suggestions on the stove, This was the first one i have made and i didn't do much research on them beforehand, just seen pictures. A second one is going to be a future project but i need to come up with final plan first. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching ED

Actually mig wortks both ways depending on all sorts of things. Boilermaker/welder 28 years.
@mickmac83006 жыл бұрын
Nathaniel Lavery like fitting boiler making is a dying art. Few guys I've worked with hated being referred to as a welder. You be about my age. Welding not my forte but was taught a lot by a boilermaker "Shorty" he would be over 100 now. His welds were beautiful. At times he would use one of those music timer tic tocs "metronome" i think its called. Most of our welding called for vertical up, for some reason mig was frowned upon by the defence department for pressure welding. Where we could Tig was used. I guess at the end of the day its the position and situation you find yourself having to perform the task. Too many times I've been feet up an incline lying on my back head under a steam 4" pipe with a 1/4" wall only to get water in the mix using an oxy accetalene.

I made one of these but a bit differently. Works just the same. I’m curious as to why it was painted though? After a good use or two really that paint would come off, and smell awful at that.

yes, the flap over the middle fuel port would do better but this reminds me of my scouting days, where we learned to dig blow holes so as to stoke our camp fire pits. Nice design. Were you a scout or better, an Eagle Scout?
