I agree I've always heard it was a mess and it kind of always held me back from getting into it but now it's one of my fav series ever and I just wish people would stop scaring everyone away :( Fate can be enjoyed even on surface level if you don't want to know everything about it.

If you just think of it as a collection of stories in a common universe structure with a common pretense, it's not that bad. Just people think of it as a singular thing that they have to consume everything of for some reason. That makes about as much sense as trying to understand the entire story in all of the DC comics.

I didn’t know that there was a lore connection between Roa and Dantes. It makes sense as his story mode hints at the two of them having some sort of history. Before watching this video I initially thought Dantes was added based on popularity and his ability to travel between singularities.

That has a bit to do with it, since his story is the explanation on how Mash returns to Chaldea (thus they clean that little plot point neatly).

Ushi was apparently put in via a popularity poll in Japan. Number one requested character was Necoarc and number two was Ushiwakamaru. But what's interesting is it wasn't a Melty character that ranked high. The people that are review bombing the game are silly though. French Bread likely can't add more legacy characters because Nasu is likely rewriting them to fit in with Tsukihime remake, but that doesn't mean those characters won't come. Both Nanaya and Len have been teased through boss rush. The actual game lore for why those characters are in is basically Necoarc wants to take over the Melty Blood universe and summoned Mash which lets her summon other servants via Mash's shield. She wants to take out Shiki and co to gain the title of protagonist. Edmond Dantes, however, is actually there to help Mash get back to Chaldea. At the end of the boss rush, it's revealed that Necoarc is under Len's orders.

Even if there was a poll, I’m surprised, especially when there are other servants that where more likely to win like Okita, Emiya, Nobunaga, Scathach, Nero or even Morgan.

Ushi was already out of place as it is, last we needed was an immortal sensei with Ryougi Shiki’s voice running around Melty just to taunt people who want the actual Ryougi Shiki. And Nero has enough attention, time to let her just die out. Adding Dantes was the smartest move they could do though since he both looks right at home in the MB universe, but he has the backstory link to Roa.

When it comes to guest characters, it doesn't matter if they fit in or not or if it makes sense for them to be there. That's why they are called "Guest Characters"

Ditto here, Saber is pretty much the poster girl of Fate series as a whole and Mash is the face of FGO so it's expected, Dantes also make sense because lore with Roa. But Ushi is kinda pushing it, they're trying but I think it's a stretch and kinda weak reason to connect her to MB. I don't dislike her, just feels like it doesn't fully make sense like the other 3.

Yeah, Ushi is the odd one out. Does not helps that she has no link to Onis or anything. She fought weaker demons and was trained by Tengus. It was Raikou who is on record as the slayer of Shuten Douji (and her Heavenly Kings slew most of the organized Oni army). Had they gone with the half-oni connection of the Tohnos and used an oni-slayer it would have worked. Though after seeing her story, seeing her FINALLY having a happy slice of life moment just indulging her interests is nice. Since in FGO all her appearances consist of her dying horribly after getting her soul cursed or altered in some (aka Chais Ushiwajanaru and Taira no Kagekiyo).

French bread should have gone with Saber's alter and Jeanne's alter along with Edmond Dantes in the game than not random popularity fanservice or waifu servants. I do love Saber, Mash, and Ushi but they don't fit the bill for the atmosphere of the Melty Blood game. I have been listening to some OSTs of the Crucis Fatal Fake fighting game" Ryudouji Temple", and "Ryudouji", which brings a nice atmosphere to Ushi's background to a Fate Grand Order fighting game. I Hope FGO used some of the old OSTs from Fate/Sword Dance, Crucis Fatal Fake, and Fate/Unlimted Codes like Melty Blood does for bringing some of the old OSTs back into Melty Blood Type Lumina.

@@WinterFlowerSakura Those two examples sound like more waifu preference. Saber, Mash and Dantes were perfectly chosen as representatives of the Fate brand (one for the brand, one for FGO, and one for the crossover lore). It’s Ushi who really had no right being there… except they somehow seem to be hinting that the Genji clan and the Nanaya have an ancestral link (Kintoki has Pure Eyes like the Nanaya, for example, and the Genji in Fate are specialized killers of the supernatural).

I mean the answer about them being added is pretty simple: Ushiwaka has an important roll on Babylonia Anime and Dantes has the most highlighted cameo from the Solomon Movie (ignoring the main singularity servants)

Either the poll was heavily restricted to a specific group of people/country or the character selections were restricted cause as KitaSean said there's no way Ushi beats certain other servants in popularity like Jeanne D'Arc Alter, Nero, Shirou Archer and Gilgamesh. + The way Ushi was implemented in the story is just plain awful imo, NecoArc just summons her and that's it, it's the same as Mash but at least Mash is number 1 girl of FGO.
